13958345 No.13958345 [Reply] [Original]

I just heard about the Flashman trilogy, so I went to the Goodreads page and started reading reviews. Is this book as wildly offensive as people claim?
The one star reviews really make me want to read this.

Never read 1 star reviews or 5 star reviews, unless you know the reviewer is actually smart

In the first book he commits rape, murder and treason and manages to convince everyone in England that he's a hero.

However you shouldn't read them expecting the books to be offensive for the sake of offensive. They're great books, but they're great because they're very entertaining adventure stories wrapped around genuinely excellent historical research.

You can read any of them standalone OP, a few have recurring characters but you can quickly gather all you need to from context. The best method might be to pick whichever historical event sounds most interesting to you.

Bullshit critique. The character is a selfish, narcissistic liar who willingly mocks principles, betrays most people he meets and constantly brags about his sexual exploits. Flashman isn't supposed to be a character who redeems himself. He's supposed to be a terrible person and never depicted otherwise.

Are you going to give Patrick Bateman the same treatment for being a rapist serial killer?

Based on a post that says you shouldn’t read 1- or 5-star reviews, you conclude that soiboi Todd’s review is “reasonable” because he’s not a professional reviewer? This makes absolutely no sense. If you haven’t read the books in question you should obviously refrain from commenting.

>Are you going to give Patrick Bateman the same treatment
Did you even read the one star review? Context was his whole angle. Yes, I realize Bateman is treated like a folk hero on this site, but he’s not treated this way in the book or film.
Having a bit of fun with a cad/rapist. And it goes on for twelve books. Is he ever slapped in Turkish jail and raped by his captors? The natives of some colony get to tear his limbs out at the end of it all? No? No release for the reader. No just deserts.
Only guessing. Go on.

Flashman is a coward who betrays everyone who trusts him for his own safety or sometimes just out of malice. The books are told from the character's point of view and structured as Flashman's confessions.

The character originally came from a book called Tom Brown's schooldays, where Flashman was posh boy bully who harasses and torments the main character.

The situations that Flashman gets dragged into are usually a direct result of his petty attempts to get revenge on people who've slighted him or win the affection of women. The fun comes from seeing Flashman oscillate between doing terrible things and somehow contriving to constantly place himself in concurrently worse situations as a direct result of his cowardice and pettiness.

I am the effort poster, I mean you're wrong that he doesn't suffer anything as bad as getting sodomized in a Turkish prison. He suffers that and worse throughout the series on multiple occasions, sometimes heavily implied sometimes stated outright.

I presumed your thank you was sarcastic however so I wouldn't have otherwise been so blunt. You should seriously stop assuming things about books you haven't read though.
