I bought a Bible.
How do I go about reading it seriously?

Gospels and Acts for Main content
Read the Pauline and Catholic Epistles for theology
Pentatuch, History, Major/Minor Prophets for Gospel context
Daniel and Revalation for Prophecy
Poetry for Worship

I'd also reccomend reading Eusebius' Church History, the Council of Nicaea, the writings of Saint John Chrysostom and the Summa Theologica

OT: Genesis, Exodus, the Psalter, 1&2 Kings, Daniel, these are some of the most literary portions. In preparation for the NT read the Book of Malachi.
NT: Read it in its entirety in the Cell Rule of Optina which is an excellent and very compelling NT reading pattern

If you dont understand some parts of it, i do recommend you to take a look in the commentary of the Haydock Bible for clarifications: https://www.ecatholic2000.com/haydock/title.shtml

It's pretty good and has commentary from some Saints like Saint Augustine.

I'd really really reccomend a study Bible, whether it's secular or Christian depending on your faith. A good chunk of the Bible is straight forward, but there's a lot of stuff obscure references that make no sense but in the context of the contemporary culture that we only know about through archaeology.

Pray a lot. Reading the Bible is like eating and prayer is like digestion.

Tbqh, first time through just read cover to cover. You'll be thinking wtf and maybe not understanding much but that's fine, the first one thru is just to gain familiarity. Then focus on the lives of the main characters. Read genesis 1-11 which is Adam and Noah, then life of Abraham, then Moses(exodus), then David(samuel, kings, Chronicles,Psalms). The covenants that God makes with these men are the foundational narrative pillars of the Bible. Then read Matthew. This second read through should get a grip on the narrative. Then you can start filling in the gaps. Read the prophets (maybe just Isaiah and Daniel for now, followed by revelation). By now you should be gaining familiarity and can direct your own reading. Maybe tackle Paul.

Pray a lot. Ask the spirit to lead you through your reading and reveal things to you.

When you pray you need to be truthful in your heart to what you're saying.

A simple but true in your heart "Pls help me" can be more worthy than hours of empty prayer.

So reflect on what you're gonna say.

Turn your attention to God. Ask him for help. Words help at first but they're not essential. Can just kind of strain and seek and appeal with your heart. Keep it simple and stay humble before God. Keep your mind fixed on God as you read. Thank him when he shows you something cool or significant in the scripture. As you read more of the Bible you will acquire the language to pray, in particular the Psalms, Jesus and the apostolic prayers in the letters.

I'm pretty sure half the stories in that book are stolen from other religions. It doesn't help that the translation is shit and there's like 7 missing pages. Overall I give it a 6/10 the giants and dragons were pretty cool but the whole Jessus arc really slowed down the pacing.

Thanks Anon, I think it's pretty important to read sections of the Old Testament and not exclusively the New Testament for enjoyment of reading, context, and also spiritual needs
Also, I just thought up an alternate reading order also for anyone in this thread considering reading the Bible for the first time
Start with Mark
Then Genesis and Exodus, followed by Matthew
Then Samuel and Kings, followed by Luke-Acts
Then the wisdom texts (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes)
Then John, Romans, James, and Revelation
I think it's important to alternate between OT and NT for Matthew and Luke especially since elements of Matthew rhyme with elements in Exodus, and likewise for Luke and Samuel

>> No.14239850

>>14233949
I'll break it down into simpler terms. If you're not already a Christian, start with Matthew and Luke. A lot of Matthew is Jew bullshit, but it was written by a tax collector directed towards Jews, so by the time you get to John it will make more sense. Reading order should be as follows: Matthew, Luke, John, Acts, Revelations, then circle back and read Job, which may be the book in there, follow it with Ecclesiastes, then re-read the New Testament books I mentioned. Now you're ready for the letters and the rest of the Bible as a whole. Don't rush your journey, treat it like you would a 600 page novel, and read between the lines. View Jesus as a character study, and vocalize certain passages to pick up on his consistent use of sarcasm. Some of the Bible is purely allegorical; Jesus spoke heavily in parables.

>> No.14239857

>>14235944
Don't waste your time starting with the entirety of the Old Testament. By the time you get to the important stuff you'll be fried, and not pick up on the most important doctrinal content, that is pertaining to salvation.
