Seasonal Borders employee here. So, since it looks like the company is going to be tanking, hard, I'm wondering what Barnes and Noble is thinking. Any chance of them buying Borders out? It'd be great if the location two blocks from my house that I work at would remain a bookstore. Also, what does a basic position there pay? I'm making $0.50 above minimum wage right now.

All I know about the Kindle is what I've heard from the Borders training programs. Is it true that you are slaved to Amazon.com for buying books? If that's the case, no matter how many features the Kindle has I wouldn't want one. What if you want to buy from somewhere else?

Anyway, yeah, the reason Borders is probably going to go bankrupt is, according to the articles I've read, a failure to emphasize e-books over actual brick-and-mortar locations, like Barnes and Noble did.

not at all
plus you get free (paid for with the device, no fees or contracts) 3G web browsing
so you can have the sum of all human knowledge in your hands anywhere (wikipedia?)

you can load your own content on the device too
i p'efer the nook, expandable memory and sleeker profile

but it has not 3G for web browsing (only store browsing, purchasing, and other nook specific things)

either is a great product though

Wait, you're really NOT forced to buy books from Amazon.com? Ha, that's our big selling point over the Kindle

>> No.1428621

We make minimum wage, but the company treats us pretty well for it.

Haven't heard anything about buying Borders, but then, I wouldn't.

For a year we were telling people to get nooks because the Kindle doesn't have a replaceable battery.

Then the color came out, and the battery wasn't replaceable. We called people to find out why, and they said "it's just designed that way."

Now there're a bunch of people who don't want to buy the color because of the battery, and we lost a selling point.

Idiots.

You can read anything you want on the kindle as long as you get it into the right format, which isn't hard. It doesn't matter where you get it.

Another great thing about kindle is however the amazon store. You can get free the first 20 or so pages of any book there as a sample, so it's like wherever you are you always have the power to browse a bookstore and check out books. and if you like them, you can buy them on the spot. Oh and the bookstore is many times bigger than any physical bookstore you've ever been in.

Well, minimum wage sucks, but what about benefits? We get an employee discount of 33% on almost everything in the store, plus a free Borders Rewards Plus upgrade, which is another 10% off. It doesn't make up for the low pay, but it helps.

From the sound of it the Nook really is a good device. The more I learn about the huge number of e-readers out there, the more I realize that they're like different kinds of silverware. They all help you do one thing, eat, but some are knives, some are forks, some are spoons. It really doesn't seem like one is better than the other. But I don't know, I haven't really played around with any of them, let alone the Nook or Kindle.

>>1428634
Ah ha, so it's like people saying "You can only put Apple music on your iPod because it has to be in the right format," but you can, in reality, convert other formats to fit? It'd be a hassle to have to switch all of your books from one to another, but at least the option is there.

You know, I've been thinking about this sort of statement. I've read books on the PC, and I've (of course) read paperbacks, and of the two, physical copies are much better. But with this e-paper and e-ink technology I've been hearing about, I'm not sure it would be that different from an actual book. I dunno, would you get a headache from reading an e-reader for too long like you would on a computer?

I'm a Business Major, but one would think that education is its own reward. Particularly fields like English or History.. sure, it may be hard to find something useful to do with such a degree, but I would imagine it helps to see things in a context.

The shittiest people in the world are people that think that education is just for getting a higher paying job. Depending on whether they get education or not, do they have nice cars or not, they still end up being one of the most saddest people I've ever met.

Particularly in my field, there tend to be a lot of people who are obsessed about stocks or bonds or whatever. All their discussions are about how much money they are going to make. They tend to not know anything about the world around them.. not even of the companies they think are going to make them a fortune. I've really come to understand the stereotype of "suits destroying everything" and "suits have no imagination".

People who speak about "education is important to make lots of money" and don't get education at all.. they are just the same, they even still talk about money.. mainly about not having it.

(I'm using my degree to work for a nonprofit for a rather low salary.)

This is ironic, considering the fact that there were rumors of Borders buying out Barnes and Noble only last month. Perhaps both companies will crash together.

If you don't have a good paying job and you're a man, you're going to have a very lonely life.

But then given what N. American women have become that may not be such a bad thing after all.
