I want to get into this guy's short fiction but there's like 20 different collections out there, what's the one to get?

STOP.
I'm not memeing like "start with the Greeks" when I say this. Start with Pushkin. His influence on Russian lit is huge and you'll genuinely have a good time. Then read Nabokov:s translation of Lermonotov's "A Hero of Our Time;" it touches on the superfluous man- the most prevalent archetype in Russian lit. Then read Gogol, Dost, and Turgenev. Gogol's "Dead Souls", Dost's "Notes", and Turgenev's "Fathers and Sons" are awesome. Then read some Tolstoy (I read Anna Karina, his short novels, and War & Peace). Then go on Amazon and buy the Pevear translation of "The Stories of Anton Chekhov." If you like it, go on to his short novels and other stuff.
Hope you have fun.

A few of his best stories:
In the Ravine
The Lady with the Dog
The Kiss
The Darling
The Duel
Ward No. 6
A Boring Story

Look for a collection that has some of those
