What is the first book you'd recommend to someone who doesn't read regularly but is in his late 20s and wanting to start.
I'd like something interesting to read that sort of sucks you into its world but also teaches you something after having read it.

Kafka on the Shore was pretty good at that for me a couple of years ago, even though I don't think it's so good right now. If you have any weeb tendencies it's a solid choice.

Jack London is easy to read and makes some clean and clear statements about man in relationship with nature. You can purchase “Call of the Wild” and “White Fang” in one volume at most bookstores, but I prefer the Barnes and Noble classic edition because it’s cheap and reliable (with a good introduction if you want to be introduced to the context of London’s life and times).

The plots move fast and the rare moments that he lingers on a particular scene or image stand out as powerful and gripping.

Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan is one of the best fantasy series to exist. Starts slow but goes on to deal with daoist beliefs and the nature of fate and free will.

Read Animal Farm – nuanced and based enough in serious ideas that majorly affected the real world to be considered "adult literature," but short and simple enough to be comprehended by high schoolers. Don't read Nineteen Eighty-Four until you've read Animal Farm.
