You can't understand these people unless you interact with them. Go spend 10 years on /pol/ like I did and you'll get a feel for the mentality.

Although they can intellectually understand that other people are not like them, they are incapable of applying this knowledge to understand the behaviour of others. That's why they have to invent "evil" motivations, even though totally benign ones exist that explain the behaviour much more realistically. They cannot conceive of the benign motivations and so they don't factor them in.

You see this with conspiracy theorists. Conspiracy theorists virtually always test as having higher manipulative and Machiavellian traits than the general population. Their fondness for conspiracy theories stems in part from their belief that everyone else is as duplicitous and self-serving as themselves (there's more to it than that, but that's a factor).

You can explain to people like Ted until you are blue in the face about how personality determines politics and that leftists are leftists because of their personality and not for any "rational but evil" reason and certainly not because they're stupid. They will point blank refuse to engage with you on that. The rare few that do inevitably conclude that, in the end, the leftist personalities are just wrong and dysfunctional and have nothing valuable to offer (an unsupportable proposition considering we all benefit from and defend the political changes championed by progressives of history).

Ted would probably argue that nobody benefits from the changes wrought by progressives, but he would be wrong. This can be revealed simply by the fact that the people who are supposedly "suffering" under it are the ones perpetuating it - yet all life is pain avoidant.

Ted comprehensively demonstrates that IQ alone is not enough to understand the world and its peoples.
