14557356 No.14557356 [Reply] [Original]

After a period of guilt and shame over past sins, I have decided to convert to Catholicism. Other than the Bible and the Catechism (currently reading through the one instituted by St. Pius X), what are other works to inform me of the Catholic faith?
In addition, what works from the Ante-Nicene/Post-Nicene Church Followers would you anons recommend?

Confessions by Saint Augustine
Shorter Summa by Saint Thomas
Story of Soul by Saint Therese

Those are three really influential works that would give you a good background of a Church father, theology, and a modern mystic. Since Catholicism is so broad and spread throughout innumerable cultures, it really depends what you else you are looking for.

Pic related is an ok chart if you can understand what the French is saying. (I'd stay away from Demonology though)

How is being a Christian mystic in any way contradictory to Catholicism. Do you think internet gnostic larping produces better mystics than the Saints?

I had actually dabbled with Gnosticism, but this was during a period of time in my life ruled by paranoia and fear, rather than anything significantly mystical. At this point, I have realized that a divine authority, or a single force superceding natural existence, confirms what my faith holds

I am happy to see a studious new convert! Be careful not to get so scrupulous that you wrathfully hate and degrade yourself over your guilt, however.
For me, personally when I came back to the faith (formerly “lapsed” catholic), I read the following:
>Ignatius Catholic Study Bible NT (https://www.ignatius.com/promotions/catholic-study-bible/))
>Kreeft’s Catholic Christianity (https://www.ignatius.com/Catholic-Christianity-P212.aspx))
>Kreeft’s Practical Theology (https://www.ignatius.com/Practical-Theology-P2020.aspx))
>Kreeft's A Summa of the Summa (https://www.ignatius.com/Summa-of-the-Summa-P2294.aspx))
>Ed Feser’s Aquinas: A Beginner’s Guide (https://www.amazon.com/Aquinas-Beginners-Guide-Edward-Feser/dp/1851686908))
>Taylor Marshall’s The Crucified Rabbi (https://www.amazon.com/Crucified-Rabbi-Judaism-Catholic-Christianity/dp/057803834X))
>Taylor Marshall's The Eternal City (https://www.amazon.com/Eternal-City-Origins-Catholic-Christianity-ebook/dp/B00ARMN4FY))
>Hitchcock's The History of the Catholic Church (https://www.ignatius.com/History-of-the-Catholic-Church-P1044.aspx))
>Saint Aquinas's Prayer Book (https://www.amazon.com/Aquinas-Prayer-Book-Prayers-Thomas/dp/1928832148))
>Saint Aquinas's Catena Aurea
>Saint Augustine’s Confessions

For things that are less specifically Catholic and more about theistic philosophy contra atheistic philosophy or Christianity contra other creeds:
>Feser's Five Proofs of the Existence of God (https://www.ignatius.com/Five-Proofs-of-the-Existence-of-God-P857.aspx))
>Feser's Scholastic Metaphysics (http://www.editiones-scholasticae.de/index.php?page=shop.product_details&product_id=393&flypage=flypage.tpl&pop=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1))
>William Lane Craig's The Son Rises (https://www.amazon.com/Son-Rises-Historical-Evidence-Resurrection/dp/1579104649))
An honorable mention goes to Kreeft's Summa Philosophica. I'll stick around if you have questions about doctrine, any of these books/authors, or Christianity. I also have access to an open directory with a great multitude of books like these, something to do with a saint known for their knowledge :^)

Introduction to the Devout Life and Immitation of Christ. It sounds as though you are interested in clarity, obedience, and majesty which is great, but be prepared to be humble also. These days, you will encounter a lot of pride in otherwise faithful Catholics, especially on line. Each circle of practice likes to point fingers and each offers different explanatios for the collapse of faith. I get a sense which way you lean, so I offer you books that have helped me focus on the point--sanctification--and not get caught up in disturbing news I can do little about. Just remember, the Church is the mystical body of Christ. When we draw too firm of lines between ourselves, we sin.

They're both true, the Great Schism ultimately comes down to disagreements about organisational structure and Caesaropapism, barring national culture doctrine is pretty similar.
Can't say the same for Protestants.
