A classic. One of the greatest novels in history

tell why.

first time I see this book brought up here. Read it about a year ago, though I had it for some years, buried under other books. What did you like about it the most, anon?

Are you new or something? This gets talked to death on here.

really? First time I see a thread about it, anyway.

literally me

Looked it up in the wiki. Seems very much my speed. I've been feeling useless and out of sorts lately. I'll definitely grab this if I see somewhere. Thanks OP.

it was even in the yearly top 100 atleast once

I suggest anyone who enjoyed it also read the latest released short fiction of Buzzati. Really great pieces of terror

When Taleb got big on this board it became heavily posted since Taleb put it in some top 10 list he made.

The Tartar Steppe fucked me up. I quit my job, told my mom I love her and went back to school. Love it.

What was the distant sound, like water dropping in a tank, lads?

>Gli parve che la fuga del tempo si fosse fermata, il mondo ristagnava in una orizzontale apatia e gli orologi correvano inutilmente. La strada di Drogo era finita; eccolo ora sulla solitaria riva di un mare grigio e uniforme.

The most effective thing about this novel is how tempting it makes the Fortezza seem. It sounds so god damn comfy, and that is what Buzzati is using to tempt us.

>> No.14686066

>>14686062
My point is that it’s terrifying. The greyness is what really lies beneath...

the part where a soldier retrieves a horse and then can't get back in ... and gets shot.

Beautifully written novel about the inevitable passage of time and the wait for nothingness and the life of monotony and the uneventful eternal rest and the endless never realized hope in the barren empty land. How can I not love it

>>14684137
Not really. It gets posted once in a while, everyone fawns over it then ignores it again. Last time the posting was more common than usual because taleb said it was his favorite book and what he models his view of human nature in or something similar to that.

>>14684390
No problem anon

>>14685172
Based. Better than the people who read something like No Longer Human or Stoner and end up depressed

>> No.14687244

Couldn't put this down. A beautiful and very affecting book.

>>14684416
They're good but don't quite match TTS.

Does Buzzati have any other novels in English? Are there any other early 20th century Italian authors worth checking out?

>> No.14688467

Ho una domanda. Io studio l'italiano e mi piacerebbe molto poter leggere questo libro. É scritto in un modo particolarmente difficile comparato con altri romanzi o no?

>> No.14689726

Apparently the movie is pretty good as well

>> No.14689761

Was the protag merely coping with a wasted life in the end, or was it a genuine moment of personal glory?

His novel A Love Affair was translated. Its out of print (Amazon has a handful of used copies ranging from $30 to $200 in price) but there is a djvu scan of it on libgen

>> No.14689801

Great book but The Opposing Shore is my true jam.

>>14689761
IMO it's a complete cope and that's what makes the novel so goddamn depressing.

>> No.14689826

Should have a place on high school reading lists.

second this. Catastrophe was probably the best short story collection I have read.

A paraphrase from the blurb on the back of my copy: "A tale of the terrible sorcery of dreams and desires." It's about being seduced by delusional hopes rather than taking action. It's about the absolutely relentless passage of time and the malaise of complacency.

>> No.14689857

terrifying book to read as a wageslave

If anything I thought it was another symbol of time passing. At the beginning, the protag is accutely aware of dripping sound of the cistern, but learns to filter the noise out.

>> No.14690320

Remember just staring straight ahead at the wall for a solid half an hour with tears welling in my eyes after finishing this book. The last chapter really hits you right in the stomach.

A fun fact about this book is that it is where tartare sauce originated from and is now now popular the world over.
