Where do I begin with this Chad, assuming the translation is correct, must've been hard being a sceptic in the Hellenistic period.

>NOOOOO GOD CAN'T BE MALEVOLENT OR INDIFFERENT WHAT DO YOU MEAN THATS NOT POSSIBLEEEEE
>THERE CANT BE COMPETING DIVINE FORCES PULLING THE COURSE OF HISTORY IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS NOOOOOOO
>WHAT DO YOU MEAN FORMAL STRUCTURES CAN'T INTERACT WITH MATERIAL REALITY NOOOOO IF FORMS WERE PERFECT THEY'D REALLY EXIST

But Epicurus doesn't deny that god can be malevolent.

Daily reminder that Epicurus was a theist

Then why even bother to point it out? It wasn't even broadly assumed during the classical period that the gods were good. They did despicable things all the time.

But, he wasn't your typical theist.

You can begin by not posting fake quotes

And then you can go back to /r/atheism

I literally said I didn't know whether the translation was correct. Anyways, where do start with Epicurus?

The quote is real it is just not by Epicurus, though sometimes falsely attributed to him. Epicurus believed in Gods, but in a very different way than the people did in his times. His believe is very closely related to his philosophy. Anyways you can start with his letter to Menoikeus to get an overall gist. In University we read a German translation of Long & Sedley so maybe start with that, although my professor said he doen't like the translation very much and there were some quotes that could be differently translated to form a more coherent world view/philosphy

Whose Quote is it then?

Yes he does. Epicurus gods are indifferent about humanity. They just live happily ever after in other worlds.

iirc some stoic in rome who said something about Epicurus. I think there is not much known about him.

A later monk or something. But was he reading/rephrasing a fragment of Epicurus or an Epicurean, and this is why it’s falsely attributed?

>> No.14774496

>>14774484
Probably. Epicurus views about the gods cannot be aligned with that quote, but his enemies would often paint him as an atheist. He probably took something someone else said about Epicurus and maybe even misstranslated that.

His enemies would think this bad press, yes. But he lived a life free of them, so may have just as easily been atheist. No doubt many people like that throughout history
>>14775239
They say he’s above morality but can’t connect the dots, so simply say “god works in mysterious ways!” And forget the whole thing. Brain cancer.
