I'm on my second year of counseling school. It's given me a ton of great names and works to read one day later. You obviously know Freud and Jung, but Adler was big on moving away from theory and focusing on practice. The existential/humanistic folks are my jam, particularly Fritz Perls and Irvin Yalom. Yalom has written a ton, and his "The Theory and Practice of Geoup Psychotherapy" is probably the best book on the subject. Other names of that group include Rollo May, Otto Rank, Martin Buber, and Carl Rogers.

Family counselors might also interest you, as they helped establish the idea of a dynamic therapeutic setting. In other words, they understood that counseling is not the Freudian doctor-patient thing. Names there include Harey Stack Sullivan, Murray Bowen, Minuchin, and Virginia Satir. Her "Peoplemaking" is considered top tier.

The the course is genetic counselling so is less a psychological approach. Dialogues and how we conduct them really interest me. Also how family units exist and interact within themselves in a range of different cultures.
I'm pretty into Jung atm, have been reading some of him off and on for a year now (currently have a psuedo-biography by Van der Post open infront of me.) Trying Freud but finding him hard. Don't have any book on hand and libraries are closed due to COVID.

Oh good! I found a mistake - Otto Rank isn't an existentialist, he was one of the original psychoanalytic dudes, along with Wilhelm Reich. All those guys are probably super interesting but either really dense or controversially weird.

The modern counseling approach seems more or less a combination of object-relations and humanism. I cant remember the woman who spearheaded OR, but Fairbairn is a name that comes to mind. He was psychoanalytically trained and then exiled himself in Ireland for 60 years or something, kinda interesting. By humanism, I mean a more positive spin on existentialism. Growth happens in the here-and-now corrective emotional experience, we are responsible for being congruent, etc. I mentioned Martin Buber because his "I & Thou" influenced the way many psychologists viewed the therapeutic relationship - two real people, one with more wellness whose needs are not on the shoulders of the other.

Frankfurt school guys might also be interesting, as they seem wrapped in that general time period of the expansion of psychology. And, of course, Nietzsche had a huge impact on the field.

Because they're a terrible choice for the target audience of the chart. They use awful, outdated translations. If you don't know, they're a side-by-side comparison of the ancient Greek/Latin text and an English translation. They're intended for language students. NOT for an English only reader who just wants to understand the text. They're not even that good for language students. If you're advanced enough to be studying full texts then you're best off using an in-depth commentary instead.

If you're "starting with the Greeks" or whatever else, a Loeb is pretty much the worst choice for you.
