Hector was such a fucking chad. Will we ever know his likes again, anons?

I don't think getting killed by a greek homo is a chad move desu.

>> No.15019511

>Hector's tender moments with his wife and son
>Hector's vow to never let his wife become a slave and Hector's appeal to the Gods to let lordly Scamandrius surpass even his father
>Hector's rage toward Paris tempered with brotherly love
>Hector's stoic resignation toward his fate, high above the reach of any stallion-breaking Trojan or warring Achaen
>Hector's vulnerability underneath his flashing bronze armor and intimidating mane-crested helm

What a mensch. That chapter really moved me, bros...

Holy fuck you pleb why are reading a fucking prose translation just read pope

>> No.15019765

>>15019524
Because then I'd be reading Pope, not Homer. You'd know this if you had any academic interest in the subject and not just a rabid desire to appear intelligent through the medium of poetry.

Hector was faced with the following two options, right?

1. Be executed by Achilles, and die without glory - sacrifice himself and his honor (reputation), but insodoing spare his country, his family, devastation and destruction.
2. To fight Achilles and surely die, but die with honor and glory (it is a certainty that he would die), but at the cost of losing his wife, son, family, city.

He chose the former, and was a HERO for doing so. He's not a hero according to our standards, i.e., sacrificial hero.

>> No.15019936

>>15019524
It's not even prose... it's written a in dactylic hexameter. You are aware a rhyme scheme isn't necessary for poetry, right? How could you not immediately tell that it's structured in verse?

>He chose the former, and was a HERO for doing so. He's not a hero according to our standards, i.e., sacrificial hero.
But the greek heroes are not heroes by our standarts. We're talking about men of prowness here, not about comic books heroes, you fag.

OKAY, NOW THAT THE DUST HAS SETTLED...
which translation of the odyssey is the best one? i want a conservative, but readable version.

>> No.15019987

>>15019969
Fagles, Fitzgerald, and Lattimore for faithful Homeric translations to varying degrees, directly from Ancient Greek; Pope for flair - but be warned he is much more figurative with his translation but attempts to keep the spirit of the words. T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) is supposed to have a quality translation, too, IIRC.

Not sure about more modern translations.

Also, Pope translated Latin which was presumably directly translated Ancient Greek. He did not translate from the primary source.

alright thanks. I saw a guy saying rieu was the best one, what do you know about that version? and I took this test
http://timlabs.org/odyssey
which recommended me Cook. but I havent seen him mentioned anywhere, so is he any good?

>> No.15020059

>>15020045
No idea about Rieu or Cook. You have half a dozen translators to choose from so I recommend going with the test's recommendation and seeing if you like it. If you don't, you can go with someone else and see if that suits you better, and so on.

Disgusting sacrilegious barbarians the lot of you. You are reading Shakespeare in Spanish.
Literally God-tier. Divinely inspired.

a real intellectual isn't concerned with how others are learning, especially not by spending their days in the asshole of the internet berating others for not knowing Ancient Greek and thus reading classics criminally. please re-evaluate your life if you ever want to be taken seriously.
