Bros I need help. How do you remember all the shit you read from a non-fiction book? Be it historic, political, economic, whatever. People say read books and get your knowledge from there and here's where my problem comes from.
I can't remember all the shit they wrote from 800 pages and then when I'm having an argument with someone then dig them from the bottom of my mind.
Like take for example CofC. I've read it like a year ago yet I remember fuck all. If people were to talk to me about why Jews are successful and why that is, I can't for the life of me can't find a smart legitimate answer, Even though I literally just read about it.
I read books pretty frequently so that makes it even worse aswell.
So what do you do? Do you write all the smart shit down into some kind of journal or something, do you repeat the things you learned the book inside the head?
What are some good tehniques to fully root that knowledge inside your brain?

The most reliable way is to use spaced repetition (e.g. Anki software), which is a flashcard system that reminds you of certain facts.
It's highly time-consuming though. I usually re-read books sometimes, and anchor situations and phrases with occurrences that happen in my own life.

Otherwise, you can teach others about the topic, which lets you master the subject.

Finally, you can recognize that most academics actually don't have that information immediately on-hand. If you go to r/askhistorians, for instance, writers often refer back to their references. Reading broadly lets you know where information is, rather than lets you recall it immediately (unless you use spaced repetition or teaching).

you should probably be reading things like academic articles and journals from a diverse array of authors on a given subject and not a single 800 page nonfiction book. To be truly familiar with something you aren't supposed to memorize phrases and lil facts -- you have to be able to connect it to other things in the world. it is not about memorization of facts as much as the critical mindset you approach the material with.. you gotta really wrestle with the stuff you read

summarize each chapter you read in 5-8 bullet points. use a notebook dedicated specifically for this. this notebook effectively also functions as your reading log. when you skim the bullet points you start to remember what you read.

Reading a book once will not give you the ability to answer every question about the book's contents. It just won't. If you're particularly interested in a topic, read multiple works on it. Or read the same work multiple times with new questions in mind. Write down with citation anything notable that you really want to remember, although it can be hard to single out what's "notable" if you don't know the subject well. Just keep reading.

Because nepotism and networks of circular references in professional publications.

See? That wasn't so hard to remember.

dude, I don't remember anything from fiction; only from non-fiction. 99% of shit you read from fiction you can forget right after you've read it because it won't be of any use in your life ever.

Also, non-fiction knowledge is inherenty more interested than fiction. I would memorize something said by a philosopher and his thoughts and ideas, but memorizing what F. Scott FIzgerald's wife ate for dinner at a Hotel place once or what Humbert thought about the child school he put Lolita into isn't interesting or useful at all.
