The worst realization one can have is that nothing ever happens. But what about the French, the Russian reveolution, what about WW1, WW2? These things are simply natural offshoots of hundreds of years of development. They are not a surprise, but entirely predictable. The popular portrayal of revolutionaires as idealistic people fighting for a cause that seems unlikely is totally ridiculous, in reality to be a revolutionary you merely need to detect the sign of the times and be an opportunistic pragmatist. The true idealists are always mercilessly crushed by the boot of history. Nothing ever happens, the entire life is merely just adapting to where history is going and what society wants, or expulsion to the fringe in the opposite case.

None of them have ever surpassed the devastation that derived from the mistake of allowing women to have rights.

Women having rights is another nothing ever happens moment. It was bound to happen, like all historical events it only splits people into those who acted historically and those who were anachronistic. Acting historically results in privileges, acting anachronistically results in pain.

The worst thing is you can totally see what is coming and there is nothing you can do about it. Yes, in the future we will have a single state technocratic global order. Yes there are many, many people in the world that do not want that to happen, probably even the majority, but it's still going to happen. You can join whatever luddite, altright, neonazi, commie, liberal, libertarian, primitivist, or whatever group you want, it's literally all for naught. It's going to happen and there is nothing you can do about it. A terrible realization because it results just in boring defeat if you are against it. Most likely you will not even be hanged by the revolution, it's just going to be a gradual, inter-generational descent into irrelevancy. Before you know it, all the people around you will point to you as that old guy with weird opinions.

I think most people know this fundamentally to be the case, they just cannot cope with the fact that reality is going to change and render them irrelevant in the process. On the other hand, fundamentally I do not think revolutionaires or historical opportunists believe in whatever cause they are supporting either, at least not those who wind up at the top of the food chain in the gradual transition to a new society. They are just pragmatic about increasing their social status. They know things are about to change with or without them, might as well hop on the bandwagon, take a leadership role and reap the benefits of money, power and fresh PTP when things settle down. It's really hard to tell who is actually in the wrong in this instance, it pays to be opportunistic.
