I'm convinced that people who genuinely enjoy coding just lack a personality and therefore made societal utility and 'doing the smart thing' their purpose for living.

Well, it’s the hot job market prospect right now, what do you expect? If we were in the 15th century, would you say the same thing about the people jumping to boats to the new world? They are boring but that has nothing to do with their career choice. Most people are boring, whether they’re coders, actors, stock traders, racecar drivers or professors.

Don't quite think that's fair. Coding allows you to take logic and knowledge of grammar to create observable actions. It's the same logic that makes writing literature so enjoyable - the creation of a world from a mastery of language and ability to understand the cognition of a reader. Doesn't coding simply accomplish similar effects in more explicitly observable forms?

Humanities stuff is much more ambiguous, who's to say if that writing of yours is good or not?

Programming attracts:
A) Trannies
B) Autists
C) Losers
You might notice a pattern here - all 3 categories display symptoms of being shitty, toxic people and a pain in the ass to deal with. I should know. Also, an overlap between them is inevitable.

Personally coding feels like a waste of energy compared to creative writing. But I still do it occasionally. So, I'd agree with you, OP.

Hi. I'm not OP though, just sharing my experience. Check any programming thread on /g/, especially /dpt/.
I'm not saying programming is bad ,but I honestly hesitate to tell somebody IRL that I do it, as it's not something I'm particularly proud of. It's like this -- programming is not smart enough to be considered a cool field like being a math genius, but it's not normie enough to say it casually like you would say "oh I'm a photographer" or "yeah I like hiking". It just... exists.

sure thing. let me use one of my cs classmates as an example.

i've had several classes with this fag, and all he does is correct the teacher at every possible juncture, usually on something like a grammatical error or misuse of a word. the dude clearly thinks he is 'very smart' despite getting a C- in calc 2, looks for logical 'flaws' in everything, and deals with ambiguity like a child throwing a tantrum.

now obviously, a guy like this is not representative of every person who majors in computer science, but it tends to attract similar types, albeit less obnoxious.

the other type of classmate i seem to have is the 'dude money' brogrammer type who really isn't very good at anything related to the subject, and derides people in other majors b/c 'they're not gonna make any money, lmfao'. their entire interest in the subject is based around external validation that they are going into the 'right' field and they are totally going to be 'set' when they pass over the finish line at graduation. in all honesty, i prefer this type of person to the other, because at least their choice is based on a sort of survival-centric pragmatism than an unsavory self-identity formed by social rejection and an unhealthy fixation on being right about everything
