I can see why people might think that, as there are very obviously different races/cultures in the series, but to think that it's actually racist is reactionary and pigheaded. All of the races had some sort of advantage or skill that made it impossible for one particular race to ever be better than another.

I think that's why I liked them so much. It's easy to say that otters were your favorite but then you'd jump to Hares or Badgers or Moles or whatever. They were all so lovable and unique.

Exactly, it's the usual hey lets look for something truely "deep" in a series of kids books like how Harry Potter is an allegory for Jesus and not for the power of friendship.

tl;dr ITT: Idiots mad that an English major is worth jack shit.

>> No.1531893

>>1531864
The reason people think it's racist is because of the way vermin are literally always evil no matter what and there's no possibility for redemption. If you're a vermin, you're bad, all there is to it. If you're not vermin, you're a Traditional English Countryman and good. Also the good races tend to fall into stereotypes based on English rural characters and the combination of that with the vermin thing leads to some pretty questionable implications where the books can be read as about the struggle of good english country people (with a certain amount of condescension towards lower classes) combating evil foreign types.

>> No.1531939

>>1531893
I feel like there were a very small number of exceptions. I think I remember a stoat actually becoming a good guy and a member of Redwall Abbey, but yeah, the whole "He's a stoat so there's no way he can be good" thing came up a lot.

I guess Taggerung was like that too, but reverse (i.e- He's an otter and no matter what kind of vermin he runs around with, he'll always be a good guy etc.)

Now that you mention it, though, those books were overwhelmingly English, which should probably be obvious, but it's definitely not something I paid that much attention to when I was younger.

OP here.

I don't visit /lit/ very often (I mostly stay on /mu/ and /k/, and the occasional Krautchan /int/) and I am surprised that this thread is still alive. I turned off my computer shortly after I made this thread. I honestly hoped that someone fucked with the wiki article. I didn't believe that he was dead. But now, after seeing the real deal articles on his death, I feel broken.

I've already finished Redwall, and now I'm halfway through Mossflower. Marlfox was my favorite book.

>Outcast of Redwall
The way I looked at the Redwall series was always that the creatures that were evil were not evil because they were evil, but because they were evil they were represented as those creatures.

Also, remember Gingervere or whatever his name was. He also married another cat that was not evil. Outcast of Redwall was about a guy who was bad and resentful of everything he got handed but he still eventually made the choice to be selfless because the Redwall way touched him deep down.

Goddamnit /lit/ I came here to celebrate Jules Verne's birthday, but instead I have my heart broken.

The man was a great writer, and the books were amazing. May he rest peacefully within the gardens of Redwall.

Noooo!
This man is probably the reason I love reading, I was addicted to his books as a kid.
Well I need to get every single Redwall book now and devour them. Literally. Because I'm fairly sure his descriptions of food actually give the books a flavour.

Man, I feel like shit now.
I always loved Redwall and probably always will. I've never been a happy person, but I always cheered up the moment I got to get a new one of those. That crazy building with all the good food and talking animals became my happy place.

Shit, still is.

The Rogue Crew is supposed to be the next one.
Assuming he finished it, I mean.
Hope so, the summary says it has a pirate boat that act like a tank.
That shit would be sweet.

The TV series really didn't do the books justice, in my opinion. The art style bothered me and the story was severely abridged. I still loved it, though.
