"During coronavirus quarantine the patients of the Iowa State Home for the Mentally Bewildered come together to create a collection of tales unlike any other. A modern epic of gilgamesh, the missing piece in DFW's final work, a key to locating Thomas Pynchon, what Osamu Dazai would've wrote if he wasn't dead. This collection inspires first, but is also inspired by such diverse creatives as Rupi Kaur, Elliot Rodger, Guenon (pbuh), and many more.

Shakespeare - Joyce - Homer - Rupi Kaur - Thomas Pynchon; but names on a page. Now, in a bold and invigorating new expression of humanity, this collection of anonymous works, ranging from scandalous to witty, from dull to zany, is the masterpiece of the century.

Yet this work, a modern epic of Gilgamesh, a tour de force of Genius, is the key to understanding them all. This work has been heralded as a true rival to David Foster Wallace.

Namely (copied but not greentexted): a general comment/suggestion on formatting.
1. To start harshly: page/paper size. Currently it's US Letter, which is too big for a book (unless we decide that's what we want: it would be an interesting object, but not a normal book). Among Docs page options the only bookish ones are "Statement" and A5 (no custom? will this all be done on Docs?). Ideally we wouldn't want to apply this slapdash tho, as it can screw up the formatting where people have used multiple tabs, images, tables. So one would have to compare side-by-side with the current size. In itself the page length would increase, though the other steps should decrease it a bit.
2. Margins also: you don't want them too small because too tight margins in a book is shit, yet not too big either (around 0.80 inch?)
3. Font: we should have a standard font, except where obvious authorial intent departs from this (the comic sans in a lot of the beginning was an anon's edit, so I wouldn't consider that as artistic intent). My suggestion is EB Garamond, but in general a readable serif (Times is for amateurs).
4. Font size: again standardized except where intentionally diverging (particularly within one section - smaller, bigger). I suggest 10 pt. for body text, 8 pt. for footnotes, 9 pt. for block quotes/epigraphs, if any (would decrease pages, but with a smaller page size it's not at all too small).
5. Line spacing: I'm not sure if something custom is preferable, but as an anon suggested, 1.15 seems good.
6. Indenting and whitespace linebreaks: this is more of an editing job and one may be divided over this, since a whitespace may be a specific, larger section break than an indented paragraph break (obvious when both are used), but where anons have divided paragraphs by a whitespace, it would save space and be nicer if these were indented without the whitespace.
7. Justification (i.e. even alignment of text on right side): should we align prose (not poetry, or where the alignment is obviously intended to be a certain way) that is now unjustified/flush-left to be aligned justified? I'd say so.
8. Page breaks/new chapters: new chapters start on a new page obviously, but it's good design to not let it start (save the title perhaps) on the first line, but a few lines below. Then again, as an anon suggested, to save space, sections which are less than a page each could be put together on one page.
9. Headers (title on every page) - haven't considered this, what think? - and page numbers (in corner header/footer, or centered in footer).
-- It's probably best with some of this kind of editing/formatting to go through it by section/chapter, instead of applying it in one go.
Just suggestions. Let's discuss.
Thanks for reading my blog, desu.

In regards to points 1 and 2 I think you're right. In my head I've been envisioning the final product as a textbook sized thing, as that's the size it's been on my screen while writing, but looking at an A5 sheet of paper now I think that's more realistic and fine. In google docs I'm looking at the default A5 page setup and the margins are much too wide by default.

As to point 3, EB Garamond is a good, proper book looking font, but the normal option seems too thin. It would either have to be the 'medium' or 'semi-bold' variety of EB, I'm leaning towards semi. This was briefly discussed in the last thread and IIRC some anons saw standardising the font as undesirable and against the writers freedom, but I do think standardising would be for the best for better continuous readability. The majority of font changes in the work are due to matters of personal preference so I don't think changing those is a big deal. There are a few pieces which use fonts with artistic intent, for example "TSA NO FLY LIST", I'll go through the doc later and comment on the pieces which I think would benefit from keeping their original font. And I think 13pt would be appropriate for the titles of each piece

6. Personally I prefer whitespaces, makes it feel less cramped to me. That being said, I think indentations are the better choice here so long as the margins are good. Margins are ultimately more important to comfortable reading I feel, so saving space with indentations instead of whitespaces is just a positive. 8 is a no brainer, yes. For 9, having "CORONAMERON VOL [#]" above every page centered in the header would be a classy addition. Practically I think page numbers in the corner is the wiser option, as this is a piece with a load of different works, so having page numbers centered would make it a bit more difficult to flick through to the appropriate page, at the corner it can easily be seen. Header/footer page numbers is just a minor stylistic matter, I'd prefer it in the header, in line with the title of the book.

Google Docs capabilities are still limited (I don't think you can apply hyphenation). 'Oswald' (Extra Light) is a nice secondary font (for titles, headers)... It's just a little test for myself to see what you can do.

So I've read the 'blogpost' comment on the doc about formatting and editing (really comprehensive, so thank you anon who put that together) and am curious as to what we will do about titles and other bits of text that need to be a a large size? (I say this as I am biased toward my 'Levirusthan' heading looking as much like Hobbes' original as possible, but there are lots of other instances where the titles need to be large or take up more room than usual). Like, what's the deal if we are going to standardise a lot of the text?

Here's my fucking shit, I'm going to go dig to see if I can find "Guys I told my dad to watch anime and it didn't go so well" but I don't have a fucking backup.

Introduction, Part 6
When asked to write a preface for the defining literary work of our time, I could not help but shudder. How does one prepare a reader for the sheer blistering beauty that is this fuckin book? WAS I WORTHY to prepare the unwashed masses to enter the temple of god that is “Clifford’s Caustic Calisthenics part 69?
My first encounter with the book occurred in 2007. It was a dark time in my life, and I was looking to make a change. If I could become more flexible, I would finally be able to fulfill a lifelong dream: autofellatio. With Christina gone (our primary point of argument, and the thing that finally rended our souls asunder, was the question of just how they get the extra creamy icecream so damn creamy. We also often argued about the role of lemon in in icewater , I decided it was now prime time to get to stretching.
Selfsuck has been a lifelong fascination for me. Ever since I was an infant, I was able to suck my own fat tit. My poor mother’s teats never stood a chance. Although she thought it strange at first for a boy child to be able to produce milk, it was nothing compared to her desire to drink wine guilt free. I sucked and I sucked and I sucked. Chapped lips and nips couldn’t stop me. No other milk would do, only my sweet chest nectar could satiate my thirst.
Now, a new dream was in my sight. By cumming down my own throat, I would become a perfect closed system, a perpetual motion machine with infinite possibility. My massive dong would ensure direct tip to throat contact, as I personally dislike the taste of semen.

I would be remiss to continue on without allowing the author to comment. I have written to him, and he informs me that COPYRIGHTED MATERIEL.

If so, please release it in black and white. It'll be way way to expensive if we release it in full color.
Maybe do two versions if you can.

Yes. The document in this thread's OP is the one most recently posted by dadadadadad from the third thread. I don't know what his strategy for resolving those edits is, but I'm going to go ahead and make a copy of it, resolve the edits, and format it in line with the rest of this thread's suggestions. I'll work on it this evening (West EU time) and post later on how it looks.

Alright took an hour or two but here is the first step: the document with all commented revions taken care of https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PljjyLkZoyqPfDp2fBQg7nDXrTaDT3CUBrh4MwxirBU/edit?usp=sharing . Next step is to comment further revisions you want to see, please keep these related to adjusting existing content only. Only add content if it hasn't been updated from VOL. 3 yet. While you lot do that, I'll get to work on adding in updated stuff from VOL. 3, I'll also add the recently written introduction. From there I will move the document to word and start editing it to look good and proper. See here for a complete changelog and a few notes at the beginning on potential page size/margins https://pastebin.com/JGeATdB6 . If you take issue with any of my decisions in regards to accepting/rejecting revisions, comment them again on this new doc with more justification, eg: "im the author you dolt".

To clarify, I am not dadadadad. I am just an anon that wants to get this thing done, hence why I created this thread and started editing it myself.

Extremely based, I don't think there is an obligation to have the doc be under the same owner at this point, as long as the final edits get done. We should wait a little while for the last few edits to come in, the make a thread about actually getting it in print

Also, why the fuck did OP re-open the doc? It was fairly agreed to be finished. An epilogue and end piece were written, and "fin" was put at the end. All that it really needed was Edits, as it cant be kept open forever if we want to get this done before we lose interest

I think this will be my final update for this thread, we are near bump limit, and we should go through a lot of discussion for the next bit of editing. To summarise: dealing with revisions is done, I will still allow revisions on my doc, but they take lowest priority now. As per usual, here's a changelog: https://pastebin.com/Td3pd93J . In this changelog as well as dealing with the last few revisions, I discuss briefly the plan moving forward and how we might approach an introduction. I understand that some anons think the intro document by dadadadad is ass, I share that sentiment, but I would also like to respect the authors so I have picked out bits that I think are good ideas for the introduction. For full transparency I did accept a revision suggestion for adding a brief acknowledgment of my work as an editor, my reasoning behind this is better explained in the attached comment on the doc itself rather than the changelog.
>>15367508
Not the anon you replied to but I hope we can work something out for a good introduction that we'll all be happy with.

>> No.15369405

>>15369208
Yeah a strawpoll was what I was thinking, or some other alternative which allows images in the poll. The back cover is a simpler matter as they generally tend to be solid colours rather than any images. I'll create a strawpoll for the next thread.
>>15369146
Thanks anon. I'm not particularly skilled with graphic design so hopefully some other anon can slap one of those blurbs on a back cover, personally I prefer the second one. The intro is a tricky thing. Currently it goes:
Page 1: Title.
Page 2: Jokey dedication with extensive footnote.
Page 3: An actual intro "dear readers" and a special thanks to me.
How I think this could be cleared up:
Page 1: Title.
Page 2: Existing jokey dedication.
Page 3: A sincere special thanks for all you wonderful anons.
Page 4 (and a few more): Table of contents.
Page 5: The introduction
If you want to write a more coherent intro, please do. Just try to keep some elements of the already existing intro starting with "Dear readers" as not deleting any pieces has been the guiding principle of this text. Also perhaps worth consideration is adding a "Translators note" after the intro, as I feel it would fit well with content of the second blurb. If we really wanted to go for the full monty could have an "Editor's note too".
>>15369365
This is a good idea, as far as I know images do not cost extra, so there'd be no harm in each volume having it's own cover.

As for me, I'll begin work with formatting this bad boy in Word. I'll probably spend a bit of time first tinkering with the page size and margins as those are really crucial.

>> No.15369500

>>15369405
Try experimenting with line height too, that makes a difference

>> No.15369724

>>15369405
I'm not sure a full table contents would be necessary. I'm not against it, but it would probably run multiple pages.
Now you say that, I think it should start like this:
p. 1/i* (recto): "bastard title": rather small, only "Coronameron"
p. 2/ii (verso): blank
p. 3: full title page
p. 4: copyright page (depending on what the (non)copyright would be, but at least something like published by /lit/, 2020, and ISBN if/when we have one - previously published /lit/ books have had isbns)
p. 5: Contents (so I would put the contents before dedication/acknowledgments/introduction etc.)
As for the contents, what I was gonna say is one could just have the contents be (after the non-listed front matter):
(I wouldn't list the (jokey) dedication, but sincere acknowledgments I perhaps would)
Introduction - Volume I - Volume II - Volume III
* (Ideally, we'd start with roman numerals and have page 1 in arabic numerals begin either with the introduction or volume I, though it's not a faux pas to just start with arabic numerals (though I wouldn't *display* them in the front matter).)

>> No.15369771

>>15369405
Okay, I can start on the Intro - I'll expand the thanks to everyone as well. For now I'll write it on private doc, then post it as a pastebin. I will have to leave it up to you to format, as I see you have a just plan for it's order, just lacking the material, so I'll write it, you make any changes or additions you feel necessary, then you can structure it, as I doing it through comments is awkward; aye?

I'll make sure to not delete any other anon's work from it, I'll copy and incorporate it, or let it standalone

>> No.15369806

>>15369771
>>15369405
Oh, question;
What persona am I to write the intro under? I could just write it as Kinslayer, but I think I could either go for a faux literary critic praising the work, who alongside the doctors helped compile the text, or as the head practitioner himself, and assume a more intimate tone with the inmates

>> No.15369889

>>15369806
This is a good question. I think a few anons have expressed a desire (when talking about the cover at least) for this to appear as a really professional literary work, for which purpouse the view of a faux literary critic would work well.
>>15369724
Very good plan. I'll seek to implement the basic structure of this once I beat Word into submission.
>>15369405
