15405797 No.15405797 [Reply] [Original]

I've started to feel my characters drifting away from my control. I can feel them becoming separate entities from what I need them to be to complete the story. They're acting in their own natural ways, not the way I would like them to act to create a satisfying story.

I've kept my secret weapon (a short draft of them all dying) stashed away in a notebook, but I don't want to bring it out yet. I will, if I ever feel like the characters have gotten fully away from me, but not yet.

did you accidentally conjure up a tulpa with your writing?

>> No.15405834

>>15405806

Not exactly. I don't believe in that tulpa bullshit. The characters only exist in my writing and in my imagination. I could write them differently than I imagine them being, but it'd be shitty writing. My best work with them comes when I keep the written them as true as possible to the imagined them.

Medication ruins your imagination, but it does help your work ethic. So it’s a delicate balancing act of taking them just enough to get work done but not taking them so much you lose your spark.

I hate people who describe their writing like that. There’s not separate entities in your head. Everything your characters do, they do because of you, not of their own will.

Tiresome r/writing stuff. You can control your characters, in fact you can;t help but control them. You're coming up with new ideas as you write and flesh them out, which is totally normal and to be expected. But it's still you doing the thinking.

>> No.15408438

sometimes i find the safest thing to do is to write about a writer writing characters, that way, even if the characters get away from the writer, they still cannot do a great amount of damage to the story, as the writer himself is still within my grasp and it is easier to control one character than it is to control a whole host of them, who may seek to interact in ways that i perceive are detrimental
