Sentia febre.
Sua testa era um muro de fogo em que os pensamentos dançavam desengonçados. Sua cabeça era o próprio Sol. O próprio Sol porém sem a razão de Apollo que a essa altura voava longe com seus cavalos.
Tudo era nebuloso e incerto. Já não sabia mais de nada. Nem mesmo do que antes julgava saber. Só desejava perecer. Só ansiava pela conclusão, desfecho final do filme da vida. E assistia a tudo como um espectador entediado. Completamente desinteressado de si mesmo. Não estava curioso nem com o "Como", só com o "Quando". Só queria o fim, não importava o pretexto.
O fim não veio.
Não veio porque a vida não funciona quando a gente quer. A vida tem suas próprias regras. E lhe apetece contrariar os seres. Como uma rainha ditosa que se apraz em se impor sobre os seus súditos. A vida lhe pregava mais essa peça.
-Não. O jogo só termina quando EU quero.
É como se dissesse, a artesã mestra, suprema sádica.
E ele já não tinha a menor escolha a não ser continuar vivendo: A razão tinha voltado. Que ele iria fazer? Pular da ponte? Enfiar a cabeça no fogão? Loucura! Pensava. Daí se conclui que a razão realmente estava com ele novamente. Tinha tomado de assalto seu cerebro, restabelecido seu julgo.
Não que a razão seja lá a maior aliada da vida, por assim dizer.
Se as pessoas raciocinassem direitinho mesmo, sem se enganar, dariam um fim logo a toda essa palhaçada. Se as pessoas seguissem a conclusão lógica da consciência de sua mortalidade não sobrava UM matuto pra contar a estória.
Mas o lance é que existe o medo, né?
Como um guarda nas adjacências nos desestimulando a avançar o sinal.
Assim nos habita o temor do desconhecido.
Algumas mulheres ficam com homens que as surram em grande parte por conta da familiaridade. Ele é louco, mas eu o conheço. E daí se ele me arrancou um dente? Que será que algum estranho vai fazer comigo? Melhor ficar com um conhecido. Vai que eu arrumo um pior?
Do mesmo jeito a gente fica na vida.
Ela é ruim mas sabe lá o que a morte vai fazer comigo? Vai me destroçar?
Vai me destruir? Vai me mandar pra um campo de punição eterna, Gulag cristã? Vai me "resetar" e me mandar de volta pra vida numa forma de existência inferior, ironia budista?
Ou qualquer outra opção dos inúmeros sectos que pululam o globo.
Não. A vida é um senhor vil, mestra rígida, porém é conhecida.
Vou ficar por aqui mesmo, cômodo no meu quarto.

A não ser recebe-la de braços abertos como quem espera um amor a muito aguardado numa estação de trem escura, sem lâmpadas e esfumaçada.
E então dou-lhe um beijo gélido despassional. Seu hálito é de hortelã. De repente tudo me é claro. Qualquer dúvida que eu jamais quis saber agora me é revelada. Corujas voam à minha direita, embora não possa ver eu SEI.

Seu texto tem alguns vícios derivados da tentativa de aproximar-se do leitor como se em tom de conversa: por exemplo, você repetiu "né" umas três vezes. Não faça isto. É cansativo e anti-musical, passando a impressão de que o seu estilo tem poucos recursos e portanto recicla os que já usou.

Apresenta, ademais, uma simbologia antiquada: Apolo, corujas, budismo, rainhas ditosas... Pareceu-me forçado.

E há também os clichês: "filme da vida", "a vida lhe pregava uma peça", "pular da ponte", "pra início de conversa". A literatura não está no clichê, mas na invenção e na originalidade, e é trabalho do escritor cunhar expressões novas, vivas, surpreendentes que possam revestir de novo sentido o que já foi dito antes por outros autores e pela língua coloquial. Por exemplo: "Acredito num céu desburocrático." - esta frase foi boa, pois divertida e inusitada.

O texto em si não é realmente ruim, mas falta o grau de atenção e mesura de cada frase, de cada palavra, que caracteriza a literatura. Parece algo que eu leria numa revista para adolescentes, conquanto a preocupação metafísica o eleve a níveis mais altos. Trabalhe e melhorará.

Still, you can read:
Epitaph of a Small Winner (Brás Cubas), by Machado de Assis
Dom Casmurro, by Machado de Assis
The Backlands (Os Sertões), by Euclides da Cunha
The Devil to Pay in the Backlands (Grande Sertão: veredas), by João Guimarães Rosa

Those are, probably somewhat unanimously, our best books written in prose. Another candidate is O Tempo e O Vento, by Veríssimo, but it's quite huge - Proustian huge - and I haven't read it yet.

The poets Carlos Drummond de Andrade and João Cabral de Melo Neto have already being translated a lot, so you may look for their poems too. It's said that João Cabral nearly won the Nobel - though we've had better poets than him.

There's a lot of things being written about Clarice Lispector, and she's getting pretty famous in the U.S., but I suspect it's because her books are easier to sell. She's good, but not to my taste, anyway. Other novelists you will find in translation are: Jorge Amado, who used to be our most famous novelist, though undeservedly (still, he's good); Graciliano Ramos, who had a very good, clean style, our Hemingway; Raduan Nassar, who was selected for the Booker Prize a few years back (maybe because he's a socialist, but his two books are good); and very few others.

You see, Brazilian literature has been left out of the Latin American "boom" phenomenon because we don't write in Spanish. Therefore, we don't have as many books translated. Oh, well! Still, some of the most original authors of the past century have been Brazilians, and those who could read Portuguese - Octavio Paz, Mario Vargas Llosa, Jorge Luis Borges, Elizabeth Bishop, Giuseppe Ungaretti - have all recognized this fact.

Brazilian poetry is far superior to Brazilian prose, and we have produced many genuinely original, genuinely great poets, mostly in the 20th century. In more or less chronological order, these are some of my favorites:

- João Cabral de Melo Neto, very rigorous craftsman
- Ariano Suassuna, more famous as a playwright, but also wrote many fine poems
- The Campos brothers, Haroldo and Augusto, very controversial, mostly famous as the theoreticians of ''poesia concreta'' than as poets, but Haroldo wrote some good poems too, and both of them were great translators
- Ferreira Gullar, the best contemporary BR authot, died in 2016
- Mário Faustino
- Ivan Junqueira
- Bruno Tolentino, very polemical figure, and didn't like the Campos brothers
- Nelson Ascher

- Alberto da Cunha Mello, creator of the ''retranca'', a sort of mini-sonnet (eleven eight-syllable lines), very self-contained and effective, which he used throughout his career, even in a small, urban epic called Yacala, beautiful poem

- Paulo Henriques Britto
- Ledo Ivo
- Dante Milano
- Paulo Mendes Campos
- Gonçalves Dias, author of some famous lyrics and a well-known epic (I-Juca-Pirama)

And many others. Poetry is probably the art in which Brazil excels the most. We have few great composers, painters, filmmakers, but a very reasonable number of really fine poets, many of whom can be favorably compared to American and European ones.

We also have had great translators besides Odorico Mendes, such as Carlos Alberto Nunes (translated the whole of Shakespeare, Plato, and Homer, as well as the Aeneid), Jenny Klabin Segall (Goethe and French theater), among others. They also provided us with very good examples of solid Portuguese verse.

If you understand Spanish, you won't have a hard time understanding Portuguese verse. All you'll need is a dictionary, though some authors might prove more challenging than others.

Pure nonsense. Each language has its own internal logic of sounds, which allow for different sorts of aesthetic effects. The Portuguese ''ão'', for instance, is great for ending a verse, and we have a wide array of vowels that can be very successfully contrasted and otherwise played with it.

Our open vowels, for instance, are good not only for depicting wide, vast spaces, but also for sounds of lamentation and melancholy:

''Ó mar salgado, quanto de teu sal
São lágrimas de Portugal!
Por cruzarmos, quantas mãe choraram,
Quantos filhos em vão rezaram,
Quantas noivas ficaram por casar
Para que fosses nosso, ó mar?" (F. Pessoa)

In the above verses, not only is the immensity of the sea clearly evident in the open sounds (which, by the way, also simulate the repetition of the waves by the repetition of these ''ah'' sounds), but also the feeling of the ''ai!'', of the lamentation, is also implicit in it.

But these vowels can also have a strong staccato effect when contrasted with other, more closed vowels, specially when disposed in schemes that circle around the iambic, thus creating a good rhythm for heroic, triumphant verse:

''As armas e os barões assinalados
Que, da ocidental praia Lusitana
Por mares nunca dantes navegados
Passaram ainda além da Taprobana" (Camões)

It might even be true that some languages are better than others, I don't know, but a great poet will write great verses regardless of language. Only someone unacquainted with poetry will think differently.

Same thing as Portugal's Portuguese. Completely the same language, the only people who have trouble understanding someone from the other side of the Atlantic are the imbeciles, those who don't read and don't think. An educated Brazilian from the São Paulo middle class will probably speak more similar to a Portuguese from the Lisboa middle class than to a Brazilian from a Rio de Janeiro slum; and in Portugal dialects can very so much that a Portuguese might find it much easier to understand a Brazilian than to understand someone from the deep Portuguese countryside.

I only discovered Pessoa was Portuguese when I was 14. I had read many of his poems in the school textbooks before that, but I thought he was Brazilian, because the language is completely the same. Saramago probably made more success here in Brazil than he did in Portugal.
