Hi, black anon here.

Has anyone here read Waking Fire by Anthony Ryan? I found a passage in the book that describes Claydons face as dark ("Here almost every face was as dark as his own"), it is also implied that he is not one of the northern people who have pale skin and blue eyes.
Is Claydon black or just middle eastern type? It's very rare for a white folk to include black people as their main characters.

Most world builders are extreme autists who absolutely obsess over tiny minutia and are more interesting in just creating and fantasizing about the worlds they build instead of actually trying to write a compelling story set within them, mainly because writing a story within your setting that people would actually care about would mean a shit ton of that world building you did would have to be left out.
Dudes who can both write good stories while obsessing over world building are extremely rare.

Keep in mind I only read Soldier of the Mist

Honestly, not really. If you know all of the major gods and the basic history of the persian wars off wikipedia, you're pretty much set. I read Herodotus because of Latro, and while it was worth reading, a lot of the time, like with the Neurians, everything that was in Herodotus made it into the book. Given the huge span of time and space Herodotus is trying to cover, and his limited direct knowledge of things outside of Greece/Egypt, you often get only a page or less on some society that gets mentioned. The non-Greek societies he goes into really deep detail are Egypt and Persia. If its some far off steppe tribe they'll get a paragraph like "they live north and east of the tribes X and Y and Z past the R river. Their women wear trousers and their men wear robes. Their king lets anyone who petitions him fuck his wife. When he dies, he is buried with all his horses and retainers. They worship the sun and sacrifice their horses to it."

What's the worst thing a fantasy protagonist has every done in any book?

>> No.15528594

>>15528533
I read a book once but i never finished it. i forgot its name but i think it was released the 60s or 70s. It was a scifi/fantasy hybrid about space demons going around conquering planets. Something about The daughter of Satan and some succubus being a military commander going from planet to planet and torturing the people, killing the men and capuring the women as breeding stock for her forces or something. It was going into lots of gritty detail. i only remember this because i think it was implied that the demons actually are some sort of warped decendants of humanity or something. Something about scripture being taken too literally over time as a result of some genetic experiments making humans look like demons. The story was also told from the Daughters perspective and she was super militant and all she ever thought about was producing more and better soldiers for her father to create an even bigger force to conquer the whole universe. But year most of the book was about the atrocities that she and her armies committed.

He isnt actually morally invested. He literally just thinks the heroes are inefficient.
The girl who can do anything is his assistant Norma. Her superpower is she is average in every respect. Average looks, average personality, average knowledge. So far she cant do things that arent physically possible like being able to be average at telepoting. But she speaks every language for example because shes average at speaking every language.
She also has a huge inner villain and likes to kill people. Needless to say shes average at torturing people too.

Showing concern for someone isn't a problem, it's the lengths of time, and chapters devoted to fluff and that fucking Shakespeare's play. Of course anyone who doesn't want to participate in that shit is immediately ostracized (because everyone loves shake-a-spear, amiright bois?).

>> No.15534409

I like bullet catcher's daughter, it's a steampunk world but the story doesn't just constantly revolve around airships or whatever.
It is irl geography but the political powers are distinct enough to be entirely separate from irl ones.
The central tension revolves around a sort of interpol entity that bans all "dangerous" technology and thus basically freezes technological advancement.
First trilogy is mysteries and heists structured around a basic revenge plot whilst the second (superior imo) trilogy is an out of the frying pan into the fire setup that explores societies on the american coastline that aren't entirely subject to the authority controlling Europe.

Other than that you could try Black Leviathan which seemed like Moby Dick with airships and dragons from the 10 pages II looked at.

>This is not your typical fantasy book. How do you feel about drunken heists, accidental time travel, wild magical battles, and twisted humor? If you answered yes to any of those, you’ll love the hilarious tale of an inept wizard with a drug problem, his cynical apprentice who can’t catch a break, and the monumental quest they never saw coming! Who ever said a story can't be whimsical and a little fucked up at the same time?
>Left with no career or prospects, the man known only as The Wizard is forced to devise a half-baked plan to steal a valuable artifact from the vault underneath the Circle of Mages. Lost in a labyrinth of tunnels, he stumbles upon a sinister conspiracy rooted in the heart of the kingdom. An evil cabal of sorcerers have been corrupting the land for centuries, hidden just below the capital. What he discovers is horrifying, even for a man of his dubious ethics.
>Will he be able to stop the dark devices at work, or will he be swallowed by them along the way?
>Wizardrous is an excellent choice for fantasy enthusiasts with a twisted sense of humor. It is packed to the page with madness, satire, and plenty of laughs! Even if you're not a big fan of fantasy, this book is great for anyone with a bit of a screwed up sense of humor.
