>“You’ve got to be kidding me. You want to seek out a bunch of /b/tard hacking imps? Online, they gave us Rickrolls and LOLcats. Who knows what they’re capable of in real life?”

>Sitting on the neighboring bench in her boots, torn fishnets, and miniskirt was a living hyperbole of retarded sexuality.

>how do we even find 4Chan?
>I’m really having second thoughts about hanging with 4Chan.

sometimes, I have to wonder if suicide isn't the only answer.

The longer I live the worse and worse and worse the the world gets, or maybe it was always this bad I'm just seeing more and more of it. I tell myself I just want humanity to be happy, but then I see all the people like the ones here who celebrate cruelty, add insult to injury and injury to insult, and I realize there's a good third of the population I can't stand. Then I think about all the people who aren't like that, who pretend they're not actually malicious but let these people rise to power and give the a platform to speak, and I realize it's two thirds of the population I hate. Then I think about all those people who are actually against this shit, who actually believe in doing something to stop it, but their idea of doing something is childish, impotent and laughable. Peaceful, quiet, unobtrusive protests that let them believe they're doing something but have no capacity to accomplish anything. These same not only avoid doing anything that would actually help, but actively demonize anyone who tries. I think about this and I realize, I don't know anyone who isn't responsible for all this

I'm more interested in the creation of man specifically, although if you have something interesting in mind about the creation of the universe that is more interesting than "it's a simulation" I'm all ears.

But here are some examples of stuff that got me interested:
Quatermass and the Pit: The remnants of an alien race landed on Earth but could not reproduce in the climate, so they created hybrids with semi-intelligent ape-like natives of Earth.
Xenogears: An ancient alien species created a massive weapon that is both digital and organic, but it malfunctioned and crashed into primitive Earth. In an effort to reboot/repair itself, it requires massive amount of organic matter. So it releases small amounts of organic matter, which eventually evolve into humans, who still contain genetic code that programs various humans into consciously aiding the weapon's eventual resurrection and/or merging with each other to give the weapon the organic matter it requires to revive. Or something like that.

Hi Anon, its me, Anon.
I think we might have misunderstood one another.
I was making an attempt at edgy humor going against the curve of the leftist agenda; by insulting the idealists who spent the last ten years telling us there is only one race: the human race, before rapidly shifting focus to one race, and trying to demonize people who say that all live matter (Racially inclusive and treating all races equally) as being racists, when they themselves insist that right now we can only focus on the lives of blacks and their plight.

This whole ordeal has made me realize that the left is radical, unstable, hypocritical, and emotionally driven in the face of those who wish for a better more equal world.

I used your statement to turn elves into a allegory illustrating this, implying that we need to think dark elves are more fuckable, as compared to all elves at large being equally fuckable.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Need help anons, lately I have been struggling to explain what exactly I want to read. I keep telling to my friends that I want to engross myself in a fantasy world of sorts and they kept shilling me Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn books and it's almost there, but just not quite. The books of Malazan Empire are much closer to what I want but I put them on hold because I want to just read something not complex in its world-building.

It's really hard to explain, but I want a good balance between character development and world-building, both Mistborn and Malazan Empire in general feel more learning towards world-building. Whereas I want to have interpersonal drama in the background of major political themes. I guess I am not ashamed to admit that Game of Thrones would be good example, but we know Martin isn't finishing that shit, I just don't want to make a post that's just "rec me books like GOT lol".

For some reason every book I try that I get recommended is either jerking off to its own world too much that you need to legitimately study it, either it's just a romance where relationships are the story and I don't want that either.

Even schlock can. And sometimes you do just have to have fun, as long as it's in moderation.

Plenty of famous thinkers and artists were big fans of absolutely degenerate potboiler detective or mystery fiction. Hell, most of the history of the English novel is sensationalist potboiler shit, including arguably the majority of canonized works. Look right to its very beginnings. i'm not >>15556548 but i have read the entire thing plus some esslemont books and for me it fails to deliver on what it builds up. that goes for individual books/storylines and the whole thing. there is lots of interesting world building and the concept of interaction with gods is quite alluring. the first two books are pretty badly written, especially gardens of the moon. while there are many characters introduced throughout the series, most of them are not really well fleshed out and of those quite a few of are thoroughly uninteresting. a lot of things do not make any logical sense, creating weak plotlines (why would they follow tavore for instance?). erikson is also very heavy handed with whatever he does
>here i'm being philosophical
>look here now we're getting towards a critical point
>this is a complicated unravelling of many plot threads
the books largely follow the same format with this many threads to unravel in an unnecessarily 'complicated' fashion. and that mostly translates to poorly written endings for me. the final unravelling where threads are supposed to be tied together was entirely unsatisfactory, forkrul were so extremely shallowly described for example. they are important for the ending, why spend so much time on other things when he could've fleshed out the things vital to his main storyline? it gets a lot of hype for being so epic and so vast scale, but that just means there are too many parts and pieces imo. that said i enjoyed some of the books, particularly first half of house of chains and toll the hounds could've been a pretty solid stand-alone novel. i wish i'd stopped after that one. esslemonts books are atrocious

The first dune book was famously unedited because Herbert could only get it published by a car repair manual publisher. It gets a bit better but in terms of pure prose the series is never anything special.
What really makes Dune standout is all the concepts and inspirations that were previously almost untouched by spec fic, of course now most authors have read Dune they're not groundbreaking to encounter.

So I just finished A Pale Light in the Black by K.B. Wagers. To begin with, Wagers is clearly a pretty competent writer, but Christ, I could feel my estrogen levels rising every ten pages or so. I'm willing to overlook the recent trend of every science fiction protagonist being a strong independent lesbian but good lord, literally every single character in this book has some sort of LGBT-agenda descriptor slapped on them, either they're trans or asexual or nonbinary or what the fuck ever, and the setting is not nearly far enough into the future for that to be at all plausible, especially given that there was apparently some sort of total societal collapse only a couple hundred years before the book takes place, so I'd think all that shit would be way on the decrease instead, realistically.

I'm open-minded enough to not drop a book as soon as it introduces a transgender character and I do think that in a perfect world people ought to be able to be whoever and whatever they want to be, and I do nominally agree that that ought to apply to gender and sexuality as well, but the society being described in this book is nowhere near advanced enough for the sheer amount of that shit to be believable at all. I mean, humanity is still mostly in the solar system, despite having wormholes, for some reason, and people are still listening to fucking Busta Rhymes, the majority of the people in the space Coast Guard aren't going to be objectively mentally ill and/or female yet.

Now, all that aside, the book is competently written and there were genuinely a few good moments. I liked Max as a character, and she was much less of a Mary Sue than I thought she'd be. Jenks on the other hand can fuck right off, there is zero chance of anybody like that making it in any sort of military organization. I also think that Wagers should have either gone with the Space Olympics or the Space Conspiracy theme and not try to do both at once, cause I never had any concern that NeoG weren't going to win everything, and the Space Conspiracy part was so limp that it only really came together in the last tenth of the book, literally.

All in all it wasn't worth it.

Just off the top of my head Peter Watts, Alistair Reynolds, Greg Egan, Ben Bova, Ken MacLeod, Cixin, etc are still publishing. Neal Asher if you want to stretch things too. More small indie authors out there like Karl K. Gallagher and James L. Cambias but they're of questionable quality (Cambias' best book is the one with the manatee aliens because his human character writing is TRASH.)

And suggesting military scifi is itself questionable, most of it relies on a bunch of handwaving to get the soldiers somewhere with the equipment they have, or make space battles be more than a bunch of AIs engage in microsecond battles while their human crews are blacked out from the G-forces.

This is the same way things were "back in the day", just nobody remembers all the mass market sword-and-laser trash.

This shows up in Excession by Iain M. Banks. One ship wipes out a whole fleet by blinking in , firing a shot, blinking out, then back in at a different angle. Over and over again until the fleet is destroyed. Whole attack is meant to last less than a minute or so, iirc.
