Is "body modification" a manifestation of self-hatred?
Have any philosophers looked into this disturbing culture?

i think so. i automatically think less of a girl if she has dyed hair or piercings.

it's not even the good type of self-hatred. like self-awarness. its like i dunno, but i know its so goddamn phoney.

No.

>Have any philosophers looked into this disturbing culture?

I'm a philosopher, and I just looked into it. Glad I could help.

It's an act of self stratification.

You might found something in Maffesoli's "The Times of Tribes" or Lipovetsky's "Empire of Fashion". Inb4sociology, they barely count.

You should ask a psychologist because that's a scientific question. Then you should laugh at yourself for taking this type of psychology seriously.

>> No.1582832

Maybe it's only disturbing because it is a culture foreign to you. What about African tribes that practice ritual body modification? I doubt self-hatred is a core value of their society.

>> No.1582834

Depends doesn't it?. Body modification CAN be a form of self-mutilation, but doesn't necessarily have to be. It can be a expression of individualism, religion, it can be tradition, a right of passage, etc etc.

yeah that's true

what did you publish?

do you subscribe to a major school of thought?

>> No.1582849

I don't think it's self-hatred. More that you can show that you own your body, and that you feel free to manipulate your body in a way that show you don't care what nature has given you, that ultimately you are in control of your own appearance. It's a mastery over one's self.

I think that's not exactly the point (at least with "non hipster/emo/worthless-attention-whoring-faggots"). I'd say thats more like a mark that reminds you and the others that you've "changed" (most times as a sign of maturity) or to keep to your body some important event/person you must not forget.

Yeah, but normal people don't need to do that much work to establish their identity. If you need to do more work to establish your identity, you must have some sort of deficiency.

Since this is /lit/:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Primitives_%28book%29
This was the book that basically broke tattooing and piercing wide open in the US.
Ten years earlier, men with tattoos = bikers and sailors, women with tattoos = dockside whores. Very few men had pierced ears and very few women had piercings anywhere else. Over the next ten years, it became slowly more acceptable, but only in restricted subcultures. This book documented the subcultures and was a major force for popularizing tattoos and piercing.

>> No.1584360

How about some people just think it looks cool - they see other people with major mods and think "I'll have some of that, I want corks through my ears as well"

The Anon who mentioned trasnhumanism was onto something, I think - modifications are becomingmore and more extreme (horns, whiskers), and it represents a human urge to be able to alter their body form. There's pretty good evidence in the archaeological record that human beings have been doing it since before they were even homo sapiens, so it may be more germane to ask why some people don't have any modifications (I have no tats or piercings, just BTW). Since it's pretty much a commonplace in human history to have something pierced or tattooed, then why do some people not have it at all, why don't we feel this basic human urge to differentiate ourselves.

In actuality, I think it's because my body is covered in scars from an inordinately adventurous life, and I've never felt the need to add to them.

Or it may be that I'm just a sheep, and I'm happy to walk around in the wool I was given. I dunno, I'm not a psychomologist

Depends on what you mean by 'normal'; if you mean the average human being, then you are kind of wrong.
