His early work was a little too Marxist for my tastes, but when "A Short History of Ethics" came out in 1966, I think he really came into his own, academically and philosophically. The whole text has a crisp set of new philosophical verbiage for the development of the Aretaic Turn and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives his corpus a big boost.

He's been compared to Phillipa Foot, but I think MacIntyre has a far much more developed understanding of the Aristotle and a much more developed account of Natural Theology. In 1981, MacIntyre released this, "After Virtue", his most accomplished work.
I think, undisputedly, his most important concept is the concept of a 'tradition', an idea so foundational, most people probably don’t even read the chapter!

But they should, because it's not just about the cladistic development of moral schemes, which MacIntyre traces to better understand the nature of modern moral disagreement, and it’s not just about the importance of the continuation of shared projects, it's also foundational to the unity of an ordered human life.

Hey Paul!

Would MacIntyre count as American? He did most of his greatest groundbreaking work in the States, but he was ultimately from Scotland and influenced by G.E.M. Anscombe, who was a a huge influence to a lot of British ethical philosophers (along with being waifu material).

No, of course not.

He's Scottish, so he'd count as a Brit I suppose. Less insulting than being American but marginally so

If you don't believe that there are objective moral values, you can still have a certain ethical system that you promote in order to create a desirable social order.

I've noticed the MacIntyre/Rawls/Nozick posts too, someone here is interested in analytic polphil/ethics. I'm ok with that. Parfit's probably going to get posted next.
