Books like this assume that conversations will always be with the latter, I doubt the author has ever managed to have a conversation about the subject outside of a highly sheltered academic or professional environment. The other issue is that the solutions to "privilege" that are offered are obviously against the economic interests of whites, to support it is to "vote against your own interests" as some on the left like to say.

I think the problem is ultimately deeper than that though. The greatest problem is that social conditions in life worth having (social decency, meaningful cultural engagement, safe communities, etc.) It's clear that black music did more work to pornographicize society than any other cultural force as it did to render us into perpetually alienated consumer zombies (when it comes down to it Louis Armstrong makes Ronald Reagan look like Lenin) renders the first two inaccessible for anyone living in the west. I have my suspicions that Obama's inaction on the opioid epidemic was just as much an attempt to get revenge on white America for the crack wave of the 80s as it to an attempt to appease the pharmaceutical industry. The difficulty ultimately is that when one looks at what it is trying to preserve on a fundamental level fragility can be described as nothing but healthy behavior, and books like this wish to pathologize just that.
