Also, was it the point of the pretext for you to come across as socially awkward? My car broke down about 60 miles from civilization and this book was in my glovebox since highschool. I decided to read it while waiting for a tow. I didn't understand the part when he thought he was being molested, he said it had happened to him like four times or something. Perhaps why he didn't like his school because he got raped or something, also why he had trouble with girls, seeing as how they liked to be mock raped, in order to blame the young men for anything that goes wrong.
I like how it ended, it made me feel like i could have closed the book at any point and have been done reading it.

Well, it may stem from his brother's death. Not too much about the death is revealed explicitly in the text, however Holden's issues reveal how disruptive to his development the death was. His fear of intimacy simply stems from a repressed fear that any close relationships he ventures into will end in the death of his close friend/girlfriend. Perhaps the fear of pedophiles stems from constant rapes his father delivers.

Thanks for reminding me about Charles Bukowski. Is Ham on Rye a good introduction to his writing?

>> No.1621960

>>1621956
Yes, actually, Ham on Rye is a pretty good place to start.

Bukowskis progression as a writer starts with his autobiographical novels (Ham on Rye, Post Office, Factotum, Women) with a bit of short stories mixed in here and there (Hot Water Music), before he finally firmly deposited himself in poetry.

Personally, I like his books of Poetry the best, but if you're going to read his novels (which are good), Ham On Rye is probably the best place to start (its the earliest chronologically, dealing specifically with his childhood/adolescence.)

If you want something for a shorter attention span, just to see if you like the flavor of his prose, pick up Hot Water Music... a collection of his short stories.
