Age of consent laws didn't really exist when these guys were alive. Up until the 1920s, age of consent in most places was around 9-12, and even that only applied to virgin girls. It was literally a valid defence to claim something along the lines of "she sucked my dick so good, it couldn't have been her first time." The crime wasn't really abuse against the child, but theft of the child's virginity, which belonged to the father.

The concept of children's rights is a relatively recent thing. Having sex with an unwed girl was a crime against her father, in the same way that raping an adult woman was a crime against her husband. These proto-AOC laws didn't apply to boys since no one really gives a fuck about their virginity, but sodomy was illegal regardless of age. For the most part, it was never illegal for adult women to have sex with boys, but I'd assume there would be social repercussions regardless.

It would just be an argument between Goethe and Novalis since the other two couldn't keep up.

Huh, I don't think I have ever seen an image of Dunsany, but I really do love his writing.
