The book slowed down for me around where you are at, but keep going, I really think the "true" last chapter (the one omitted from some american editions in the past) brings out the truth of the novel, instead of just leaving it as some kind of id-fantasy for teenagers. Maybe Burgess tacked it on at the end for just that reason, but it worked.

My copy of this has the dictionary of the slang he uses in the back. I don't see why you'd need it, but people have told me that the language in the book made it difficult for them.

I thought it was pretty easy, I got the book down in a couple hours, first time I read it. Its good, its also one of the few books with a good film adaptation. (sure, its not identical, and somebody is going to rage on that... but they never are.)

it must've been ruined from the beginning on then, for it just didn't work for me. his use of russian made me want to poke my eyes out; the constantly subversed sublimation of violence was done well but it wasn't any different from Babel or Remark. But: They both had a say about a real existing situation using real existing slang and none was trying enrage me over 14 year old girls being proud of having a lot sex.

So why do you folks like him? Explain. Because Moloko is cool? Because there's rot and bog and all his holy angels?

it's all preposterous decadence I say. And if you like you must be a poorly educated easily impressionable very young man.

Kubrick had powerful music and choreography and stripped the book from everything that any sane person would have knocked away as well.

I kind of like "A Clockwork Orange" despite its many faults but it is however just one long essay of everything Anthony Burgess happens to hate and be scared of. Namely The government, young people, intellectuals, bad parents and science. Its the book your crazy uncle would write if he had literary pretensions. All of Burgesses books are filled with the general dystopian fears of the 60's & 70's such as over-population, corporatism and socialist revolt including the kind of squeal for CO "The Clockwork Testament" only this time it was Islam and Unions who were the bogeymen.
