Holy shit man this is me. I’m slowly rebuilding myself with fitness and education and just feeling alive again. But holy fuck. I read school reports from when I was a kid and I was the leader in groups I was the kid who got along fine with everyone and even made really close relationships, but moving around and getting bullied in late HS (because I had dropped a bunch of weight and was essentially low energy for a good 4 years) fucked with my head so much. A quick history lesson. The original Apu ("Ruoka Apu Apustaja" or "Food Help Helper" in English) did not refer to the frog himself, actually. Instead, Apu Apustaja was the caretaker the mentally handicapped frog. The Apu mythos expanded quickly, however, for example with Apu's best friend and confidant "Junssi" (a misspelled version of the name "Jussi") making his first appearance. Apu seems to appreciate the smaller rather than the finer things in life and only crave love and acceptance of those he comes in contact with. This central theme of Apu's love towards all men and animals alike gave him his staying power, and he kind of became a feel good meme.

Good explanation but you glossed over the dark and mischievous roots of apu. The character himself is actually evolution of pic related which was way more of a chaotic(and retarded)evil version. The original few threads were posted with stories of biting the helper ankles and throwing buns all over the place because of some mistake the helper made i:e he brought Pepsi instead of coke etc. The meme itself was rather dividing and lots of people hated the forcing but it became universally loved when it changed from the yellow blob or rainbow dash amalgamation of the same type to the current apu iteration.
