Mills, Rawls, Nozick, etc. Modern American Conservativism is basically organized around the question of liberty and its limits (and by "limits" I mean lots of things, like how far it can extend before it collapses, whether there are other proper "moral" limits that kick in before then, etc.).

Read 'Right-Wing Critics of American Conservatism' by Hawley to get an idea of what the conservative outlying factions are like. These were policed out of mainstream conservatism by organs like the National Review, but most have stuck around in some form or another.

Also, read the Claremont Review of Books for an intellectual engagement with conservatism and its history.

THis only sounds profound if you have zero understanding of the history of capitalism.
If fascism is capitalism in decay, then why did it not take off in France, Britain, or the USA, the three countries which invented and most vigorously promoted capitalism in the world?
Why did fascism develop in Italy, a country which had barely even unified and established a parliament, in which feudalism was still a force to be reconciled? How can fascism be "capitalism in decay" when capitalism had barely even started to develop when fascism came onto the scene? Furthermore, why was it that the middle classes were largely opposed to fascism, which was an ideology almost exclusive to a small vanguard of disenfranchised veterans from WW1?
Do you think that Germany, Italy, etc. had no legitimate grievances following the war? In what way were these grievances economic, as opposed to geopolitical? I've never seen an explanation for that either.
