>fell for the S.T.E.M meme.

It's sad to thik that I could've been well spoken, well read and I could have been able to write poems, but instead I chose the ability to do integrals in polar coordinates and calculate the potential energy of a charged sphere. Don't fall for the S.T.E.M meme /lit/.

you cant.
life is barely long enough to get good at one thing.
Just look at the typical polymath and how pathetic they end up being in most fields.
It is too rare to be a Da Vinci or Leibniz and near any other polymath was pathetic at at least one of the other things he is hailed at being good at.
Getting good enough at one thing to be noticed is hard enough, two such different fields is near impossible.
You can become a "happy with myself" loser like >>16625684 or actually make something, become a genius, but that takes so much work that not absolute dedication will make you fall short.

Hahahahaha what the fuck is this bullshit

>A hundred years have now gone by since in the midsummer of 1882 Pierre Duhem, a graduate of College Stanislas, completed with brilliant success his entrance exams to the Ecole Normale Superieure and embarked on his career as a theoretical physicist. His father, a textile salesman, hoped that Hierre would pursue a career in business, one of the few professional fields where perhaps he would not have succeeded. Not that young Duhem lacked sense for the practical. He could have easily made a name for himself as an artist had he developed professionally his skill to draw portraits and landscapes. His ability to make a point and his readiness to join in a debate, could have earned him fame as a lawyer. A potential actor was in sight when he entertained friends with mimicry. That as a student of physics he entered and stayed first in his class at the Ecole Normale, did not thwart his talents for the life sciences. No less a biologist than Pasteur tried to obtain Duhem for assistant. His command of Greek and Latin would have secured him a career as a classicist. He was a Frenchman, not to be met too often, whose rightful ad miration for and mastery of his native tongue, did not prove a barrier to the major modern languages. As one who taught himself the complex art of medieval paleo graphy, he could easily have mastered the many auxiliary sciences needed by a consummate historian.

Want to become an English teacher in Arabia. Nobody wants to go there for obvious reasons so they’re paying people lots of riyals to teach them the language of the disbelievers.

Honestly with the pricing vs content of current universities its better to just get a piece of paper in something you can make money with while you self study in literature and philosophy. Thats what ive been doing at least.
for literature: simply slowly work through the western canon, and read secondary lit for each work you liked, search youtube for uploaded university lectures.
for philosophy: read a few philosophers, read standford encyclopedia of philosophy, look up the author names of standford articles: half of the time they put their curriculum on the web. just an example i came across recently: http://www.protevi.com/john/courses.html

To any college anons reading this, if you’re feeling severely depressed at school try to talk to someone about it as quickly as possible. It only gets worse if you don’t.

Yeah, I have several textbooks sitting around gathering dust, and I read far less frequently than I did before I started working. The problem is that self learning is so drawn out and requires so much more self-doubt that a formal education. Even those who find success at the beginning will reach a point where they’re no longer capable of teaching themselves the material.

You're so fucking wrong. The state of literature education now is horrifically bad. You're far better off studying sciences, as shit as they are now as well, than going into a literature department and wasting your time and money on a degree which instead of making you a literate person turns you into some ideologue.

Yep, and it only gets worse the older you get. You either go all in from beginning, in an attempt to make a career out of your passions; or you fall into the trap of balancing career and passions, which inevitably results in the relegation of the latter to the status of an ever diminishing hobby.

>Who? Sorry, but 99.999% of worthwhile thinkers are members of the academy, and this isn't a coincidence.

The only not coincidence here is you thinking that way, showing how academy creates ignorant moronsthat dont even know the history of philosophy

Giambattista Vico was considered a nobody by the academy, Leibniz was considered a nobody by the academy

This idolatry to academy is fucking ridiculous and its almost the same as the pervaiding cult of scientism that has rottened western society

If you didnt mean to use an appeal to academy, then im sorry, but thats what i got from your post

Mario Ferreira dos Santos was the ONLY modern philosopher that could speak like an equal with Plato and Aristotle

Was he did was basically a synthesis of Pythagoreanism and Scholastic philosophy. He took all the logical apparatus of Scholastic philosophy and reexposed it to the Pythagorean philosophy of numbers, understanding numbers as categories and ontological laws. Once he made this armor, which for him would be the metalanguage of sciences, he used it as a basis to create a cosmology

There should be a statue of this man in every street corner in brazil right now

I had this preconceived notion that majoring in Computer Science is soulless and people only do it for the money. I begrudgingly chose it because I thought I was worthless at everything else.
What I didn't know is that it would be fun as fuck lol. A lot more theory and computing mathematics than I expected. I seriously recommend it if you are looking for an alternative to a math degree.

Is it based or cringe if I abuse my country's university system to become as educated as possible without paying anything? I went into stem and quit at about 2/3 of a 5 year program without a degree (after realizing that anything up until my degree would have been useless practical specialization) to study philosophy and classics. Is this a legitimate way to become a polymath? I feel like free education systems rely on nothing but guilt and enforced credentialism which I don't give a shit about. Boomers here love spouting spouting strawman memes about lazy hippy students stealing their hard earned tax money by studying social sciences or African studies for 20 semesters.

I have no idea why people keep saying that getting a humanities degree will save you from becoming a "bugman." I don't know how it is in other countries, but in the US the only jobs you can get with a humanities degree are completely bureaucratic. Not only are you less likely to get a job, but if you are employed it's going to be the same kind of miserable white-collar desk job literally everyone else with a degree is doing.
Anyone who's actually well-read or intelligent in this day and age had to teach themselves, whatever degree they might have gotten means literally nothing.
