How do you determine which writers are better, especially at such elite levels?

I read a lot as a child/teen but then I discovered vidya and I'm trying to get back into books, but I need some very needed guidance.

I like Bukowski. I read just about everything he published during his lifetime. But he is decidedly *not* in the same class with Shakespeare and Dante; he lacks the range, and the depth, and the profundity of those writers. Please, anon. Do your homework.

Silly premise of a thread, perhaps it was just created to share your excitement of bukowski.

Bukowski is a very fine, sensitive writer. I have only read Women and Post Office, so perhaps he's an incosistent writer but what i've read was marvellously good. The brutal honesty, even about his exaggerations. The capacity to veil his suffering while at the same time making it the very core of his writing. Such a wounded and hurt man - but he affirms it, does not hide it. Bukowski makes himself naked to the reader like few other writers. Of course, you need to be able to pierce beyond the facade. I am always surprised at the negativity and criticism he receives, since to me it was so immensely touching to read his books, it actually made me fall into a depression if i remember correct.

But that's many writers. There are endless amounts of great writers, some speak to us more some speak to us less.

If we were to try to nominate the best writers, Dante and Shakespeare are deserving of the spot. Most great religious works and epics belong into this category as well, though authorship is of course problematic.

Then i'd nominate Herodotus, Plato, Schiller, Goethe, Nietzsche. These definitely belong into the circle of masters. There must be many more of course.
