So I finally finished the four shadow books.

Ender's shadow was nowhere near as groundbreaking as ender's game.

But goddamn its 3 companion novels were amazing.

Shadow of the Giant really made Children of the mind feel silly.

Bawled like a bitch at the end

>> No.1673158

Oh and what other in universe adventures are worth reading?

>> No.1673162

Oh and is anyone buttraged over the announcement of Shadow's of Flight's(the continuation of both quadrologies) first chapter?

Bean dies

>> No.1673170

I just remembered that quadralogy is not a word.

Anyway ordered ender in exile because I want it even if its bad.

I guess I'll start solar kill, Wingman or some of those stainless steel rat books to get my mind of super serious sci-fi

Wait, how exactly were you expecting him to survive?

But OT: I agree. I loved all the books, and I would say Ender's Shadow is right up there with Ender's Game. I just love Bean as a character - his character interactions (especially with the teachers) are great.

Oh are you fucking serious? It was bad enough when Ender in Exile turned out to be "People I Don't Care About Having Arguments I Don't Care About: The Book", worse when Empire and Hidden Empire showed that Card has obviously gone batshit insane, and now I won't even get my fix of my favorite character?

Fuck you Orson Scott Card

I liked Harry. But I will never touch these Orson books.

Bean has a genetic disease. How could they fix that? I dunno, maybe with the gene altering virus that they have complete control over and/or the ability to create new bodies out of thin air?

Maybe he's just trolling.

Have you read any of his other series?

He fucking loves trolling when ender's not involved.

Fucking children of the mind.

If it wasn't for the romantic subplot making me feel giddy like a retard I would have lit that book on fire.

Eh. Personally I was just glad everybody stopped bitching about fucking everything. Really, that's all Xenocide was: 600 pages of whining.

Are you trying to supply a title to a book in this post?

I marathoned the sequels so it was like reading one book which was a really awesome reinvention then an odd book about autistic chinses girls, and then a book about space magic and fucking.

If I wasn't such a pulp book fan I don't think I could have enjoyed it as much as I did.

But I own over a 100 "The Destroyer" novels so my taste is obvious.

Oh... oh.

Damn.

Well, in my defense, I haven't read the books in like 6 years - totally was not factoring that into my thinking.

I started reading Orson Scott Card's column back in high school. Gradually I realized that I didn't agree with anything he said. Thanks, OSC.

Why does everyone care about the author so much but not the books?

Sure some of his views are visible in them but easily ignored if you disagree with.

Its not like you all hate Alice in wonderland even though the author had other things on his mind.

>> No.1673217

>>1673214

Read Hidden Empire and try and say that again. We are capable of separating the author's personal views from his works. Said author, however, is not.

In Ender's Shadow there is this situation at the beginning of the book where Achilles, Sergeant and Bean overtake the waiting line for the food kitchen. After almost killing Ulysses to establish power Achilles walks along the line talking to the other bullies. When he comes to one who is ready and prepared for a fight Achilles stops and attacks another bully right next to the one who would have been trouble. The reasons why Achilles would attack him I can understand (unprepared, distracted). What I can't understand is the reasoning of why the bully who was originally about to get physical would be reluctant now to attack the weaker and slower Achilles. He saw what the gang did to Ulysses and nothing changed in the way they brought down the second bully. Why would he be afraid to act now but not a couple seconds before?

Every other confrontation in Ender's Game/Shadow I could understand or at least make me think I understood.

>> No.1673251

>>1673243

They spell that shit out. It's to send a message: "That could have been you". But they attack someone weaker than him in order to avoid issuing a direct challenge to his authority.

It's one guy up against an army of little kids armed with rocks. They could fuck him up good. All the bullies are too selfish to give a fuck about anyone else, so they won't band together to stop the kids.

>> No.1673252

>>1673243
Achilles had his "family" but besides him all the other older kids in rotterdam didn't have a group mentality.

If he jumped in it probably would have gone brawl between him and the next bully who wanted his ass.

>> No.1673255

>>1673251
>>1673252
The message "that could have been you" was already sent with Ulysses, all the bullies saw it and still one of them decided to get physical regardless until the bully next in line got attacked with exactly the same tactic as Ulysses. Nothing changed and there was no reason for the bully who wanted to fight to change anything.

>> No.1673257

>>1673255
Ulysses was a loner and everyone else in line had a couple of friends within the bullies. When Achilles attacked one with friends and his friends didn't help everyone else also knew that they couldn't count on their friends helping.
