Pre-Challoner Douay Rheims is best if you can't read it in any of the original languages (Greek, Hebrew, even Latin is preferred). Interlinear translation with a dictionary of the original languages can help a lot.
King James is better than any modern translation for understanding the original text.
If you want a nice read check out the Knox translation

I don't know if it's only for Catholics, but it doesn't have any (or much) commentary. If you wanted Catholic commentary you could get the NT only study version

What are /lit/'s thoughts on the Jerusalem Bible? It's the only version I've read. Is it fine or should I read another translation?
