to express steampunk via any medium more sophisticated than arts and crafts is like trying to teach a farting cat to appreciate poetry

No I'm really not trying to troll. I just don't know a damn thing about fantasy, other than that "High fantasy or epic fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy that is set in invented or parallel worlds. High fantasy originated with the writings of William Morris, George MacDonald, and Lord Dunsany, and came to fruition through the work of authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, whose major fantasy works were published in the 1950s.[1] High fantasy, along with sword and sorcery, has become one of the two genres most commonly associated with the general term fantasy"

I'm trying to date this girl who's really into fantasy lit, so I'm attempting to learn more. I haven't ready any of it since I was like 13.

Steampunk is a purely visual thing. It can be done in comics and art, but books about it will always be shit.

Here is why people think steampunk is shit, and it isn't even a very good reason:
So, way back in the days of yore, around 1993, a goth fell over in the dust, got up, took a good hard look at himself and invented steampunk. Like other offshoots of that particular subculture, such as cyberpunk, it was quickly embraced by the underground culture as a whole.
However, steampunk was about to be shot in the head before it hit five.
It gained an unprecedented amount of popularity in the mainstream. Average joes, who professed to hating and misunderstanding the goth culture, embraced steampunk and all its aesthetic values. Steampunk versions of everything were made. A steampunk blockbuster movie was made. It turned out to be shit, but the damage was done.
Quickly disowned by the subculture who spawned it, who pride themselves on remaining obscure, it was left to flounder about on its own without anything to keep it grounded. Thus it was raped savagely and marketed too intensely and quickly. It lost steam [lol] and like anything that doesn't belong at the forefront of culture, became annoying and old to the layman.
The repercussions of this are a worldwide hatred of steampunk, even amongst my spooky friends, and it has been relegated to 'cult' status, celebrated by few and largely ignored by many.

I love the look of steampunk but would never write a book about it. It's too visual-based, with no other real quality to make it stand out. Bladerunner with steampowered replicants is still Bladerunner.

Everything after lord of the rings is whats wrong with high fantasy. Repetitive shit with very little variation

Not that I hate high fantasy, mind you. What I'm saying is it just tends to attract schlock writers and steampunk is even worse in this case
