I'm becoming retarded. My attention span has dropped like a rock in the last 5 years to the point that I can't make it through a paragraph of printed text in one go. It's like there's fog over my brain. I can summon the willpower to study a topic seriously for all of 15 seconds before a flighty, impulsive need to do something else strikes me and if I try to force it I feel physical pressure in my head. I've looked up words I didn't know in the dictionary only to remember that I used to know their definitions years ago but forgot. Simple concepts of math, literature, politics, or logic escape me when they didn't before. I've come to find that I don't enjoy doing anything anymore, not consuming media or escapism, not attempting to be creative, not my hobbies, not browsing the internet, nothing.
What do I do? Are there any books/articles on this topic and how to fix it? At this rate I'll spend all my free time staring at a wall or rocking back and forth because I'll be unable to concentrate or comprehend anything but the smallest, most easily digestible bits of information.

You are depressed, stop making excuses and begin manufacturing compounding copes to improve your life.

I am kind of experiencing the same thing anon. Honestly I recommend exercise in order to reduce your anxious tendencies and forming more clear goals about what you want to achieve when you choose to do something. When you rationalize why the thing your doing is worth doing it should reinforce your focus as a means to achieve that goal. Then you will get some sense of accomplishment which is closer to fulfillment and further from instant gratification pleasure.

How old are you? Is your brain still developing? Maybe something physical is happening to your brain. If what you describe is whats happening to you it might be serious enough to try meds. Everyone loves to talk shit about shrinks and ADHD being fake but it works for some people.

Seems to be some sort of depression you've sunken into. How is your life going ? There are many things that could give you what you have. If you're older like 25-30 then it's your body starting to buckle after much abuse. If you want to fix everything then you must live a healthy life-style.
1) Make sure to sleep right and sleep around the same time
2) Wake up around the same time and force yourself to do a morning routine - this can include cardio for 20-40 minutes then meditation followed by a shower (not too hot) and a nutritious meal. If you havn't then you should roughly plan out your day
3) Make sure you eat right. Seriously this is something most people don't do properly and it fucks with them
4) Abstain from overly drinking and smoking. Even drugs are not good in the long run
5) Try to stay away from message boards and social media until after a certain time, preferably after 6pm or so
6) Pomodoro technique for productivity
7) Try to be social in a face to face setting. Calling is okay too but try to make up reasons to get out of your home
8) Add excercise
9) Define short term and long term goals
The list goes on and on and i'm sure there are some resources that can help you out. The point is that you need to consciously work on yourself because your body can't carry your brain anymore
