Is this any good? I haven't read any fantasy in over a decade, but felt an urge recently. I liked Wheel of Time, Riftwar and The Runelords back in the day, hated Sword of Truth. How does Mistborn compare to those?

I intensely disliked the WoT books written by Sanderson, but I have read on /lit/ that his own novels are entirely different and very good.

I really enjoyed it, because it is a heist novel. The second and third ones are worth it if you feel invested in the characters or the Cosmere in general, but I feel that Mistborn would have been better as a standalone.

Oh and to add to this the main love interest is just as bland a character as one would expect from a mormon who has very obvious opinions on male female relationships.

Yeah, it's alright as a standalone. Fun ride, good fantasy, pleasant ideas and atmosphere. Any longer than that and the teenage stuff starts to take over.

I got about 50 pages into that guy's book Way of Kings which at the time was supposed to the best thing he ever did but it was YA tier trash and I had to throw it away, so I imagine Mistborn is even worse.

mistborn is actually a touch better but not at all worth reading. sanderson is a mormon idiot and those cultists are incapable of producing anything worthwhile.

He might be a Mormon but he actually wrote a good atheist character in the stormlight archive. He can write the opposing perspective quite well.

This. I enjoyed it a lot, surprisingly so desu. The synopsis doesn't do it justice, so my expectations were low, but it grabbed me from the start.

No one cares about women irl or in books. Pointless commentm

They've been mass-producing blondes for the last century and a half. I'd say they're one of the better demographics.

As someone who got 700 pages in before dropping it, I can attest that it only gets significantly worse.

agreed, would have been a really solid standalone, turning into a trilogy weakens it

Weird, I don't remember a lot of teenage stuff in book 2 and 3. But if OP managed to get through WoT there's no reason to think he'd be bothered by the romance in Sanderson's works.

Mistborn is bland. Bland main character. Bland prose. I read the whole trilogy and by far the worst book of them all is the final one. In fact, I have not read a single fantasy book since finishing this series because of the terrible reading experience (4 years).

It was pretty good. The first one got me hooked, the second is filled with political subplots so it's kinda boring, the third starts slow but the last 100 pages are the best of the series.

Pick the first one and if you like Vin and the side characters keep going

>> No.16919880

1st Book is a heist book
2nd book is pretty much 1776-esque democracy jerking off pretty fun action too
3rd book is mormon propaganda but definitely a wonderful ending for a YA SF book

I think it hold up, it's one of those books where everything ties together through all three and makes it retroactively better. That said, fuck the cringey dialogue. You expect me to believe uneducated slaves speak like that? Sanderson is a piece of shit hack.

I think it's mostly fine but really noticeable at times. People speaking without contractions while they're meant to be angry and shit feels off

It's YA whether you like it or not, even if Sanderson says it isn't.
