Well, I've frequented /lit/ for 3 years ish, so my taste is partly influenced by being on here. However, I maintain that /lit/ actually does have a good taste in many respects, since you find much of the Western Canon on here.

I've always been a reader, but when I began reading again 'properly' it coincided with a religious awakening I was undergoing. The books that affect me most tend to be ones that influence my faith in some way. I read a lot of Dostoevsky, although it's memed a lot here The Brothers Karamazov profoundly influenced my faith and worldview and I still think of it semi-regularly. In terms of affecting my life and thoughts, other fiction works with the biggest impact include Bernanos' Diary of a Country Priest and The Death of Ivan Ilyich.

Over time, partly due to my studies, I sort of gradually exposed myself to the Greeks-- I always knew of the Iliad and Odyssey, but reading Aeschylus, Euripides, Sophocles, Aristophanes really gave me a good grounding to go onto reading Dante, Milton, Cervantes, Shakespeare and the other greats. You pick up on progressions of themes, ideas and influences in a way that I find incredibly rich and rewarding. It's like a colossal puzzle with little pieces fitting into place. With the novel I enjoyed moving onto Flaubert, Proust, Henry James, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, Goethe and Mann, etc.

In terms of sheer enjoyment I've kind of grown into Tolstoy for my fave at the moment. In terms of sheer prose aesthetics, it has to be Joyce or Nabokov. Woolf has some really beautiful imagery in her prose at times, too.

Philosophy is slightly different, after familiarising myself with Plato and Aristotle I progressed to Augustine and other early Christian thinkers, and then Aquinas. I tend to balance my reading of fiction with spiritual books, rather than philosophy, these days.

Don't know if that has answered any of your questions anon, I'd be happy to give you more detail for specific questions
