I'm a philosophy major who knows philosophy majors from other schools and I've never heard of anything bigger than 12 pages double spaced. Maybe there were a few outliers here or there but I don't remember them. Either we're talking about writing fiction or you don't know what you're talking about. It's a huge paper.

I don't know what you tell you mate. I've taken philosophy at two different universities and was asked to write at least one 20 page essay for neatly every single classes. 10-12 pages (double spaced on top of things? Most teachers I've had wanted 1.5 anyways) is what we had to do on average every half sessions.

I don't write anything in humanities, but when I used to write physics related things it was mostly writing and finding out the same thing I wrote in some random book. I think it also works on humanities if your research/annotations are organized properly.

Well that frankly sounds insane. I live in the US as do the people I know. Maybe your classes were structured differently but I have no idea how you had time to read. Normally in the US papers are like 9 pages.
Though I've had clases where in total I wrote something like 30 double spaced pages, but never in one assignment like that, it was spread out over like 8 assignments (and some of them not fully cited papers).

Teachers in philosophy here are incredibly flexible. I've handed papers well past the beginning of the following session and had teachers retroactively adjust my grade to A-.
I had a tradcath friend who decided to write an essay on abstinence once, he could not bring himself to finish it because he became obsessed with it. The assignment was for 20 pages, he gave it to his teacher about 2 months late, 45 pages. The teacher gave him an A+ and wrote on the paper that he would be happy to direct his thesis on this subject.
