I read it from a recommendation in an earlier edition of this thread and it was worth it. Even if I think the author doesn't quite manage to satisfyingly wrap it all up in one whole theory or narrative there are so many Emperor's new clothes moments and mini-conspiracies laid bare in that book.

I’ve been on a sci-fi kick lately. Not through the whole books, but Clarke’s “Childhood’s end” and Watts’s “Blindsight” both really shook me at the end. Its formatted for the most part as a list of descriptions of pageants happening in an ever expansive cave network, with thousands being slaughtered or pigs being herded and sucked off to the chorus of children and flutes, for hundreds of pages, interspersed with poetry and rambling stream-of-consciousness dialogues.
