Nice clothes are far too accessible and affordable to be a marker of social class anymore. Many 'luxury' brand names are associated with middle-class garishness (see: Louis Vuitton, Gucci, YSL, etc.). The only stuff that's truly out of the average joe's price range are hideous abominations most people wouldn't dream of wearing. People don't recognise the individual items in a Raf Simons collection, but they can often tell from the feel of the outfit that it's high fashion in some ineffable way, not able to be imitated at a Uniqlo (e.g.).

It's the same with literature/film/music. How do you differentiate your elite tastes in a time when anyone has access to almost any piece of art, at extremely affordable prices? Weird, inaccessible shit, purposely designed to elevate you above the dilettantes. There are entire industries and artists that make enormous amounts of money vulgarizing these 'innovations' and repackaging them for a mass middle-class who want the satisfaction of engaging with (clearly labelled) avant-garde art without being challenged in any way. Once it becomes passe, the elite move onto something else.
