I really like Jane Austen's style. I also think she's good at structuring a plot, even if her stories can easily discourage people because of how seriously she followed the "write what you know" rule.
I like Charlotte Brontê too; her defense of femininity as something noble and worth pursuing is very inspiring and perhaps needed nowadays.

Nope, don’t care for her one bit. Find her imagery to be boring and tame, her religious sentiment to be limp and not very enthusiastic, I don’t care one bit about erotic or romantic poetry, she’s not sensuous enough nor do I see any profound depth in her philosophical thought and she isn’t lyrical enough that I could see a natural music and beauty just in the sounds of her work.

So I don’t really see anything I’ve read of her appealing, I’ve read a poetry collection and I’ve read around a 350 page book concerning her to try to understand the appeal. I don’t see it.

Neither, was just going on about how I’ve found no real appeal in Whitman in the Whitman thread, and Lear’s nonsense verse isn’t as good as caroll. His phantasmagoria is pretty enjoyable compared to everything of Lear I’ve read.

I’m more into Blake, Dante, the symbolists, decadents,(especially Swinburne) Spenser, keats, Li-he and a large amount of the more ethereal lamenting Chinese poetry like the Chu-Ci.

Once more, what do you find in particular appealing and good about Dickinson in actual gold mechanical detail?

I can say I like my poetry to either be high conceptual in terms of philosophy or theology, high sensuous and filled with Synesthesia and musical qualities, like a good deal of Baudelaire. And if not is more philosophical and if it is not decadently sensuous and fantastical/grotesque and if it is not lyrical, there’s really not much I can point to saying why a poem would be good yeah?

I’ve very little exposure, mostly through friends shilling and a few short essays concerning them and the like. From what I understand I would despise them, as they reject utterly the Old Testament, are more about trying to justify faith to yourself or the world.

About the “journey” and not about the knowledge itself. I get why others find this appealing but I have absolutely no care for pathos. I am cold for anything but God and the only thing that gets a fire blazing in me is unapologetic undying faith and love of God which is willing to sacrifice life, well-being physical and mental and so forth for God. I have not once in my life ever doubted god, nor have I ever felt existential crisis or problem with Faith. So I find these things abhorrent personally.

butterfly's a total midwit whose intimidated by actual conversation unless its shit flinging about concepts he doesn't understand. don't even bother trying

i personally have found dickinson decently enjoyable. the repetitiveness of her verse when reading several at a time has a hypnotic quality, and her slant rhyme stops it from falling into a monotonous rut given the general simplicity of her language. i agree with you that the religious themes feel quite "plastic" and vapid, but i've enjoyed a few of her nature poems very much, despite them generally being sort of confused and directionless.

i think you need to consider the fact almost all of her poems were in draft form, with very few slipping through the cracks in letters to friends - most of these might never have seen the light of day if it was her choice, given the difficulty editors have with picking a definitive version of almost every line.

here's my favourite i've read:

The wind tapped like a tired man,
And like a host, 'Come in,'
I boldly answered; entered then
My residence within

A rapid, footless guest,
To offer whom a chair
Were as impossible as hand
A sofa to the air.

No bone had he to bind him,
His speech was like the push
Of numerous humming-birds at once
From a superior bush.

His countenance a billow,
His fingers, if he pass,
Let go a music, as of tunes
Blown tremulous in glass.

He visited, still flitting;
Then, like a timid man,
Again he tapped- 't was flurriedly-
And I became alone.

>i personally have found dickinson decently enjoyable. the repetitiveness of her verse when reading several at a time has a hypnotic quality,

While I enjoy hypnotic qualities, I find a whole lot more of that in Poe and again maybe my tastes are different from all of the translated poetry I’ve read where hypnotic repetition is such a common thing.

>and her slant rhyme stops it from falling into a monotonous rut given the general simplicity of her language.

Oh I don’t get tired of the same repeated over and over.

>i agree with you that the religious themes feel quite "plastic" and vapid, but i've enjoyed a few of her nature poems very much, despite them generally being sort of confused and directionless.

Eh, that’s a problem I’ve seen a lot of American has and I see it pretty often with the modernists that they’ll just string together imagery they find beautiful and just kinda forget they were even doing a narrative at all, and vaguely they try to connect it near the end. Not a fan of that personally.

>i think you need to consider the fact almost all of her poems were in draft form, with very few slipping through the cracks in letters to friends - most of these might never have seen the light of day if it was her choice, given the difficulty editors have with picking a definitive version of almost every line.

Eh that’s fine I guess, I still have to judge her poems by what we have though ya know.

Like I’m going to dissect this poem the same way I would dissect it if some anon posted it in the poetry thread.

>The wind tapped like a tired man,

It’s an odd simile which doesn’t really do much for me, and if you’re trying to imply tired slowness why are you using an alliteration?

>And like a host, 'Come in,'
>I boldly answered; entered then

Boldly does nothing and it feels by her dividing the lines that she’s struggling with the lines. This doesn’t flow naturally.

>My residence within

Utility line.

>A rapid, footless guest,

This doesn’t progress the imagery and is soon abandoned so why bring it up.

>To offer whom a chair

Stilted, doesn’t flow so easily when I recite the poem as a whole.

>Were as impossible as hand
>A sofa to the air.

Ugly lines which don’t do anything for me imagery or sound wise.

Again why alliterate, wouldn’t sibilance be more appropriate for a windy poem?

Push from a bush ? Perhaps my taste is too kitsch but I don’t get how that’s a lovely image, the middle line is also too heavy in comparison to the rest.

>His countenance a billow,
>His fingers, if he pass,

Again, I feel struggle/tension with these.

>Let go a music, as of tunes
>Blown tremulous in glass.

Same complaint, tremulous in glass also means nothing to me.

>He visited, still flitting;
>Then, like a timid man,
>Again he tapped- 't was flurriedly-

Feels like the energy was drained by this point, nothing further to say but continuing just to continue.

>And I became alone.

A pretty cheap ending that doesn’t really complete the narrative or image.

And I know I’m being harsh and I know it might come off pretentious but, I’ve simply not found her enjoyable.

butterfly cant get rid of the trip because its the only thing that gets her the attention she needs mentally speaking. notice how she outright refuses on every occasion to give an alternate explanation

shes little more than a stereotypical dumb vapid whore who thrives by inserting herself wherever she can and making it al about her. here on /lit/ she pretends to like books or be some sort of intellectual but its all a song and dance to satisfy her vapid feminine urges to be the center of attention

she literally cannot provide an alternate explanation for why she does the the things she does even though it should be extremely easy and good for her in the long run if my assertion is not true

you get upset like that because you think women are not respected enough or some such thing and deserve better, yet here you are, day in and day out, proving your own assertions wrong beyond a doubt by acting out all of the worst stereotypes of women that show precisely why they were held as second class citizens across almost the entire planet for almost all of human history, and why they deserved it.

the funny thing is you probably could have proven yourself by showing at the very least a glimmer of hope for the feminine half of humanity by exercising the bare minimum amount of self awareness and humility by admitting that you tripfag here because the attention makes you feel good and boosts your ego, but you couldn't even display that tiny bit of cognitive awareness and genuine humanity, the best you could muster was to make the Admission through omission of an alternative answer
