I was watching the trailer for a reboot of a television adaptation of a manga I read as a kid.

The setting of the story hadn’t changed at all, but I found it creepy despite having had been an autist for it at one point. It gave me the same feeling utopian cults tend to elicit.

Yes, fiction isn’t supposed to portray the real but I find that if it portrays an excessively positive view of reality, like a child’s fantasy it comes across as wrong. Did the child in me that’s supposed to appreciate that die? Can /lit/ explain?

It's the reverse for me. The older I become, the more annoyed I become towards morally ambiguous or "complex" stories. I prefer elegant stories of either relatively pure light or darkness.
I actually read Dostoevsky when I was 16 or 17, but his kind of works are no longer suited to my tastes. I only read children's lit and horror now because only absolute duality can touch the true nature of reality.
Also, I can give my anime/manga dualism list too if interested.

>Yes, fiction isn’t supposed to portray the real
No, from the sound of it, you've increasingly come to believe that fiction precisely is supposed to portray the real, and so fiction that portrays unreality makes you uneasy. In other words, you're a realist.
What's not to understand
Possibly you've realised weeb stuff is gay and weird as well

I should add Yuru Camp to the top row also...*
But it has to be symmetrical with the bottom darkness. Maybe add Parasyte to bottom and Yuru Camp to top.

Yes please.

I guess the more I think about it I’m less unnerved if the setting is clearly fictional than if it could be real. I’m wondering if it’s an anxiety related issue where I expect things to go horrifically wrong and think it’s strange if I can’t find a clear conflict
