>Speaking of contemporary perspective, one of Odysseus’ least stellar qualities is his attitude toward women.
>He’s really big on this sexual double standard in which the exact same behavior types women as sluts and men as studs.
>Actually the whole epic in general is incredibly—wait, why is my desk moving?
>Oh, the secret compartment is open. It must be time for the open letter.
>What have we got today? Well, it’s Medusa, a representation of woman as a monstrous serpent.
>An open letter to the patriarchy: how are you so incredibly resilient?
>Also, please explain something to me:
>How is it that the only way for someone to become like a good heroic strong man is to have sex with lots of women,
>but if a woman has sex with lots of men, she’s like tainted and impure and horrible?
>Patriarchy, I don’t want to get too deeply into math but in order for men to have sex with a lot of women, a lot of women have to have sex with men.
>That’s it, that’s the only way, patriarchy!
>So basically you’re saying that the only way for men to achieve manliness is for women to fail at womanliness!
>It’s bad! Actually, it’s evil! I hate you! Best wishes, John Green.
>Yeah, so the whole epic is incredibly paranoid about female sexuality.

He likes David Foster Wallace, I watched some of his videos talking about his ideology. I'm pretty surprised, I expected him to be one of those left wing YA assholes but surprisingly, he had very nuanced perspectives on all things. Just like DFW, he dislikes certainty and comes off as a genuine person. That said, his books are really bad.

>As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.
Sleeping is an absolute state: one is either asleep or not asleep. One must then per definitionem fall asleep "all at once".
>The marks humans leave are too often scars.
Would bruises be better?
>What is the point of being alive if you don't at least try to do something remarkable?
Based Faustian striver.
>Maybe 'okay' will be our 'always'
Irredeemably nonsensical even in context
>Some people have lives; some people have music.
Some people have lives; some people manically write creepy schlock for prepubescent girls.
>You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful.
Infinities can exist within a countable set, but not in this way. Beets, bears, Battlestar Galactica.
All in all an entertaining author, all for the wrong reasons. I have the suspicion that his message for young women may resonate more in the way that he has in mind in some remote village in Pakistan.

The thing is all men don't get sex and women don't fuck just any man.
If one guy went around fucking 30 women a day but noone else was handsome enough, he would be a "man" in that he fucks lots of women and they would be "womanly" in that they don't fuck just anyone.

He writes mediocre-to-pretty-good YA fiction, and that's all that's significant about his novel-writing in and of itself. That facet of his work (ignoring, for these purposes, his internet stuff) gets both more negative and positive attention than he deserves.
