I'm not OP, but what prevents me from reading much is my OCD which cuases me to reread every single line 500 times, thus making the act of reading painful. I also have anxiety about not truly understanding what is being said, and so I say "better not to have read at all instead of pretending like I understand", so I never pick up a book. I can't even read short stories because my interest usually drops after five pages and I have to continually refresh 4chan and reddit every two pages into a book. Send help

As if it's their fault most of the time. Modern technology and distractions is designed by millions of intelligent people to be as addicting and time consuming as possible. Im willing to bet many people who composed "great works" in the past would have fallen prey to the same problem if they were living in the 21st century.
Anyway, im not a "great man" but I used to spend 12 hours a day in front of the computer too. And eventually disciplined myself out of this self destructing cycle, went back to school, got my degree, and now consider myself a pretty accomplished person in my particular field, fulfilling some of the potential I've been told I have from friends and family since I was a child. I will not doubt many of those people are just like me

I used to have an endless amount of ideas and would feel passionate but would never start on anything because I had zero discipline and my internet addiction had rewired my brain to seek only endless, easily accessible novelty requiring zero effort. J would have a couple months of explosive productivity and then slowly fall back to my old addiction. Getting over that and my new habit of day drinking was one of the hardest periods of my life.
You see the internet and digital distractions as inconsequential little toys that has no serious effect on anything, I see it on par with the most addictive of vices and drugs.

To tell you the truth, I primarily read philosophy, e.g. Plato, Aristotle, Hume. After sometime had passed, my brain suddenly started thinking that I must take notes on fiction as well. I couldn't give you a précis of what happened in each scene of Hamlet off the top of my head, and my brain starts panicking and just says to itself "Why even read at all?" As I've said before, I suffer from OCD. The only thing that's really helped me much is calm meditation. I know none of this is rational in the slightest, but I don't know how to dispell these thoughts from my mind.
