From the job postings I see, have a degree in the arts, know how to use Adobe products like Illustrator and InDesign and have a good instinct for editing.

I worked in publishing for about 4 years.
Most the editorial assistants, marketing people and Public Relations people I worked with did internships after junior year, and had degrees in the humanities from Ivy League schools or some other very competitive university.
The real kicker is that you get paid maybe $37k to work and live in NYC so none of them had loans or anything like that, by and large they were mostly rich girls.
It’s also a shit job where you’re literally an assistant and have to do petty indignities like answering someone else’s phone even though they are sitting right next to you and spend half the day at the copier getting their shit ready for meetings.
If you want to work in Accounting/Finance/IT than it’s very easy you just have to be willing to accept like 20% less than you would make elsewhere. Unfortunately a lot of houses are already moving these back office functions to Jersey and places like that.
So basically like every other job, to do anything utilizing “soft skills” you cultivate with a BA is very difficult and mostly dependent on luck.
I’m less informed about the Art/Graphic Design side of things.
Obviously it’s also very pozzed and it’s often hard to keep a straight face in meetings if you have any kind of sense. You won’t have a very good time if you are genuinely intolerant like a lot of /lit/ claims to be.
Like Advertising and other Media Companies in NY you see a big dearth of experienced professionals over the age of 30 because people everybody exits the industry either to get out of the City or to make more money elsewhere.

If you really want to do it you have to decide beforehand what field/department you want to work in and then target publishing houses rather than just vaguely targeting an industry.
