TL;DR - So you've faced the absurd, and rejected suicide. Where do you go next? Are self-help books actually useful?

Current list of what I want to read:
- The Upward Spiral
- The Willpower Instinct
- Atomic Habits
- Deep Work
- The Richest Man in Babylon*

Long story short, I almost got served 25 years in jail by the tyrannical state I lived in, and lost almost everything I have. Friends, money, possessions, and every other aspect of my life. I have a few thousand left, and some close family and friends that still support me.

Picked myself up over the 2 months following, thought and contemplated, and decided there is still worth in continuing. I'm in the process of moving to a different country, and rebuilding from what little I have left.

No.
I recommend reading Nietzsche if you haven't already. Start with Zarathustra or Beyond Good and Evil, idgaf.

Those 25 years were there because of a political crime or a sexual one? Since you're contemplating reading self-help books, I assume the latter.

Why even bother going on at that age? You must be 50.

Neither.

To keep it short, I was dealing drugs, which is a big no-no around here. Nothing crazy, just hash and psychedelics.

Add to that the fact they were imported by and from a political and religious adversary, and the fact I lived in an absolute autocracy with deep religious roots, and you've got the 25 year sentence.

Only way I got out was because it would have been really bad press if I actually got sentenced. I'll keep it at that.

I've read and contemplated enough philosophy that it almost lead me to suicide and mania.

It is food for thought, but does not provide guidance for action and practical improvement, which is where I'm at.

Based opinions anon. I thought about it, but I'm hoping to start living legal. Pursue a degree, build up a career, and enjoy life beyond dopamine.

Fulfil a purpose and excel, so that one day I can burn that shithole to the ground.

Thing is, after so many years in that way of life, it's not exactly that easy.

Self help is good when it’s a book that teaches you a skill or a mental model. Self help that is “motivational” or “modern philosophy” is garbage.

So you've never aspired to improve upon your habits and general livelihood?

If you want to improve your drawing, you read anatomy and technique books. The reasoning goes then, if you want to improve your living and habits, you read books that help you achieve that.

The question here is not if, but what.

And that is what I'm looking for. I have a few in my list that I heard good reviews for, mentioned them in the OP. Will check the rest of those too.

Any other recommendations or if you got any critiques of those ones, all very welcome

Start with the stoics. This snippet sounds a bit grand but Epictetus has a lot of blunt and to the point pieces of advice on how to direct yourself.

Just understand how the brain works, what agonist/ antagonist is, how reuptake inhibitors work.
Read up on research papers on long term effects of the drug of choice on subjects brain.
Forget about "having a fun time", if you're here for that - get bonked on IV fentanyl or something, we are trying to become as Gods here.
And don't touch MDMA/ MDA

Ignore the stoics.
Even something as banal as Anton LaVey is better for achieving real world goals. Don't "work" and "do your best". Get fanatical and radical.
Stoicism is for cucks.

Never really liked Stoicism. I enjoy the highs, and learn from the lows, just so long as they don't dip down too far.

I still want to live and love and hate. Still want the drama, and still enjoy the ride.

I just want to build something worthwhile, while still being able to enjoy the pleasures of life.
