Are there any good books for people who have only just realised faith is essential for a good life? I could just dive into the KJV but that feels quite inaccessible and I'm not sure I'd glean much insight from it without a preparation text.

If you truly believe faith is essential for a good life then you simply must be reading your Bible everyday, or at least trying to.
You don't necessarily have to read in order, of course. You can just open to chapters or collections of chapters and read them.
Keep a verse journal. Whenever I come across a specific verse which is profound to me, I write it down in my journal.
As far as texts outside of the Bible, it would help if you told me specifically what sect you adhere to, if there is one.

Thanks anon. I will try this. I fear that reading the bible immediately will just make my rational mind even more defensive, particularly if I stumble trying to understand the profound poetry of a passage. The genealogy intro to the KJV is pretty dense and not the most enjoyable place to start, but I guess if I can take it randomly and keep track of it I'd be okay.
I don't particularly have a sect. I was christened in the Church of England but I rarely attended. I am as close to a spiritual blank slate as you can get, outside of having taken too many psychedelics at university (and by consequence absolutely believing there is some higher intelligence out there). For that reason, I likely come across as a bit cringe and certainly uninformed.

Just use the NIV since it’s easy and begin with the gospels and the letters of Paul. These are accessible enough.

I'm an atheist, but I've learned to respect some aspects of religion and faith. I throughly recommend this book:

An Anglican? Your a rare breed.
In all seriousness though, perhaps you'd like to look into Emerson's essays. He was a spiritually 'sectless' thinker and so his attitudes toward religion follow a more earthy route. Perhaps you'd also enjoy A River Runs Through It and Other Stories by Norman MacLean.

Thank you anons, by your advice combined you've pretty much given me more than enough material to engage with over the next month. I'll look into each piece diligently. Really appreciate it.
