No. he arrived at Paris when he was 17 in 1871. A Season in Hell was written in 1873 when he was 19 and the Illuminatios were written about 1974 when he was 20. He was out of literature in 1975 when he was 21.

how is this not earth shattering? it's the reason a lot of people neck themselves for sure.

>> No.18407809

a lot of things are like this. most of the best music was written by children, essentially. how they manage to write such complex things when most people have barely begun their life is beyond me. Depressingly, even these people usually rapidly decline after that, and by the time they're 30 or so they're pretty much done. We never had a chance, anons.

And? Kant didn't write the first critique until he was in his 50's and Caesar was a nobody until he was like 40.

There are no hard rules for life OP. If you're intimidated by the fact that some famous people reached their highest achievements while still young then start working on yourself instead of bitching about it on here.

Don't beat yourself up, anon. Almost any figure who achieved at a young age (Rimbaud, Mozart, etc.) was abused by their parents.

Also OP writing is not a competition, sure we'll never be Rimbaud or Baudelaire, probably not even Prudhomme, but we might make one or two unknown people smile and get our ideas across. This is quite enough imo, making some people care about what you care with your talent.

fuck you, you know exactly what he means and are just being obtuse. He was clearly a prodigy but he also lived in a time and place where such a thing wasn’t quite as abnormal or discouraged as it is today. Neither were there as many distractions as there are today.

I see people here beat themselves up a lot because they’re not successfully publishing at 20, which is not realistic. I’m not one of these people who believes that you can just start reading deeply at 26 and become a great novelists. I do think you have to immerse much earlier than that. But it is dumb to beat yourself up because you’re not better than Rimbaud. Hell, if Rimbaud had been alive today he almost certainly would’ve been posting on 4chan rather than writing poetry.

I don’t think you could ever say conclusively. You could only speculate. Personally, I don’t believe people are so much directors of lived experience as we are swimmers, sailors, or surfers. We’re pretty beholden to the currents of our time and place and though we might have this or that attribute or this or that inclination or this that proclivity to do some action, at best we are only ever responding to the waves that we find ourselves in. You can do a lot in those waves but it wouldn’t make sense to
compare two people swimming in two unlike currents. You know what I mean?
