Why do people like these so much?

>> No.18483403

No taste

>> No.18483427

Do people really? I’ve never seen anyone in real life own one.

>> No.18483430

looks cool, has a vibe of nostalgia, and also makes the book long-lasting.
aesthetically pleasing and functional.

Have you owned one? The back does not feel sturdy at all and the decorations come off if you rub it.

18483597

I hate being a consumerist so badly
I only bought everyman's library but they make me so happy, I imagine the people buying those are similarly happy with them
Tbh I don't see the problem assuming the covers are cloth, the paper is good quality and the signatures are sown

Try other editions. Everyman is okay, I bought Dante's inferno Everyman. What's insane is that Everymans' Dosto's Demons is like $100+

It’s probably out of print.
I only realized recently that Everyman’s editions don’t always remain in print.
Also, that might have been the new translation.

>> No.18484054

According to the blog of a small publisher, impressed cloth covers with designs, are actually cheaper production for him than having dust jackets made.
The small publisher didn’t specify why it was cheaper( maybe having people put the dust jacket on the books), plus, he usually uses cloth hardbound covers anyway, so maybe it’s just less expensive to have a design printed in the cloth, rather than applying a dust jacket.
My main concern is just that the binding is sewn.

How is Library of America?
>>18483882
No, it's just that some of us have burdens we have to carry

>> No.18484149

>>18483396
It's not a matter of people liking *these* gaudy hardcovers. It's a matter of people liking hardcovers and having no other options.
>go to a book store
>everything is paperback
>shelves and shelves of paperback
>Penguin classics? all paperback
>the only hardbacks are these overpriced abortions
>so people pony up for them
If bookstores had used hardcovers that were 20, 30, 40... 90 years old, I bet most people would buy those over these instagram vomits.

>> No.18484167

>>18483434
Except they are poorly executed cookie cutter versions. The old way of doing such leather work yields a more subtle and complex end result, much less garish. These are pretty much Las Vegas. Not a huge fan of this sort of thing even when hand done with skill, but I can at least appreciate the craftsmanship in those.

>> No.18484191

>>18484131
Library of America is good, well made, archival quality paper (exceeds ANSI spec) so no yellowing and the contrast between ink and paper remain over time. If you are going to buy from them just get the subscription and select to receive no books. This lets you order books from them for $5-$10 less, they come in slip cases instead of dust jackets and they will be far less likely to be out of stock, they do not reprint until the slip case members editions are out of stock so the dust jacket versions are often out of print for long periods.

The one catch is that they give free shipping on orders over $30, most of the members discount version end up being under $30 while the non-member books are almost all over $30, so it is a complete wash if you only order one book, so just always order two or more so you get the free shipping and savings.

You might be able too, check it out. Either way, Penguin/Random House (Knopf) is a distributor of them so they are available in most of the world now. Pretty sure Knopf is their printer, much in common with Everyman's as far as binding goes.

I would argue but 90% of my hardbacks are in my display cabinet not my bookshelves.

They are good for traveling imo. The designs can be on the nose, but they are pretty rugged.
