>Is reading fiction as a hobby a waste of time?
It's true you would probably get more out of reading nonfiction than fiction for most books, but it is certainly better than watching television or playing videogames. If it really gets your dick so twisted then just read nonfiction instead. The value in stories is that you can apply the lessons from the good ones to your actual life. They are not completely without value, but you could also learn lessons like this from studying history or just observing the real world.

How about just enjoying art for the sake of art? Wasted time is so subjective idea it doesn't even mean anything.

This. I don’t understand why aesthetic appreciation isn’t a sufficient enough reason for people to read fiction.
Would you walk through an art gallery and at the end of the day, while leaving, say ‘Wow that was a waste of time?’

Good fiction can see the world through the hallucinations of the author, an entertaining book being something that could be believable as non-fiction, especially when years later it proves to have foreseen the future!

Yeah, everything has to go through some qualitative scale measuring depth and utility and relevance which turns viewing art into some stringent, soulless process. Standards and taste are a means to an end but can quickly betray their purpose if overvalued.

are all of the arts - visual, music, film etc. - a 'waste of time'?
is beauty a waste of time, is spirituality a waste of time, if they don't bring any material gain?
i would argue no, but then i also believe in god despite my material position in life.
if nothing else, the arts, specifically literature, allow me to feel more connected to fellow humans than i ever do in most social situations.

Most nonfiction books are written poorly and are overly long. I feel like I learned more from literature than from nonfiction. Also how many nonfiction books that are published now will still be read in 50 years? Not a lot I bet while people will still be reading the great literary works.

it never works like that, life is too much about sending signals about something you want to happen rather than "making your own happiness"

I feel like being able to accurately express your ideas in the form of characters, plot, and images requires far more talent than just spitting them out raw. Most nonfiction is also dreadfully written and often fiction authors have far more based, enlightened views.
