Books a Milllion is the same. I worked there for 2 months. They have a bargain section and they put most of the classics in there. However none of the bargain books are in our system. One day a guy came up and asked "Do you have Heart of Darkness?" and one of my coworkers looked it up and said no. Luckly for the guy, I was there and knew we had it but it makes me sad the classics are just brushed to the side and basically ignored for a whole section of Funko Pops.

I check vialibri for the best price/edition available. Amazon rarely beats alibris or random ebay sellers.
The best place to buy cheap books is estate/garage sales; tho' most don't have anything special, you'll occasionally stumble upon impressive collections. Around the corner from me, there was a fellow who's been a Catholic school teacher since the 60s, and while most of his books were standard fare, there were some interesting mid century history books and his prices were $1 for hardcovers and 50¢ for paperbacks. Another time, a family who'd lived in the same house since the early 1900s had an estate sale and sold each book for a dollar, they had 4 or 5 rooms just lined with books, mostly 19th and early 20th century, a whole room of just french and german titles, another room in the attick full of sheet music, really interesting stuff I wish I spent more time there, but I was still a teenager and rather self-conscious.

Does anyone still publish books like this anymore. That is, those fat but small softcovers with the quickly yellowing pages that used to be ubiquitous at thrift stores and garage sales, and in the purses of certain women.

I bought some Mishima paperbacks from the 70s recently and they reminded me of them. I prefer that style to the modern glossy plastic finish on just about every book, paperback or dust jacket.

I bit the bullet three years ago and order online. You get good deals, even just on amazon. Luxury art books for 1/4 of the price. Can order French or Italian books delivered in two days. Mathematics and theology that you would only find in one or two ultra specialized shops in the country. Of course it doesn't beat spontaneous sales like >>18556555 but that's a very unreliable way to get books.
Many publishers allow you to buy straight from their website. That means it takes a while longer because you don't get Bezos insane logistics but I can understand if you insist on not using it.

There is nothing else important. History began with the holocaust. There was nothing before it, and nothing all that important after it.
No dissenting opinions on the holocaust either. It is the only thing in the world that is 100% permanently true.

thriftbooks, bookfinder, booksamillion. I will not buy from amazon because the adl has banned a bunch of books off of it. Not to mention the completely bogus standard about banning "material associated with violence." Sixty-seventy million deaths associated with communism, but I can buy Lenin books and Soviet flags no issue, but six million is enough to justify banning anything NS or NS-adjacent. No thanks, I will buy my hate speech elsewhere.

Attention amazoners: you can get the same books on walmart.com. They have more online than their crappy in-store section. Search by author. Can't get used books though.

Your B&N sounds like crap OP, does not sound anything like the one I go to. I would hazard a guess that the managers of your store have tailored it to the interests of their customers, and it sounds like you live in a very low IQ area.

There's pretty good book stores in America, but the chain ones have fallen low since Amazon ate their lunch. Where I live we have a very successful used book store that has since franchised, with the main store being a massive, multi-level labyrinth in the middle of downtown with shelves stacked to the ceiling with books.
